Abstract:

An improved method for sealing off the refractory metal exhaust tubulation of the ceramic arc tube employed in the high pressure sodium discharge lamp. The method involves a single four-directional crimp of the tubulation to form an X-shaped cross-section and the subsequent electrical resistance tip-off of the tubulation while it is disposed in an inert gas atmosphere at a pressure which is higher than the pressure of the rare gas atmosphere within the arc tube and tubulation and is also above atmospheric to insure all oxygen is flushed from the area of the melting.

Abstract:

HID lamp has resilient safety switch positioned proximate the inner surface of the dome portion of the protective outer envelope in contact with an extremity of a resilient leaf-spring support portion of the arc tube frame, to maintain the switch in a closed position. When the envelope is shattered, the normally closed switch will open to break the electrical path to the arc tube, thereby rendering the lamp inoperative.

Abstract:

A high-speed integral machine for fabricating substantially contaminant-free, high-intensity discharge arc tubes. The machine comprises a turret having a plurality of arc tube body holding members mounted about the peripheral portion of the turret. A plurality of work stations are located about the periphery of the turret. The turret is indexed in a stop-and-go fashion so that each of the plurality of arc tube holding members is sequentially indexed from work station to work station. Utilizing this device the fabricating operations for high-intensity discharge arc tubes are completed on one turret without substantial cooling of the arc tube between fabricating steps and the possible introduction of impurities therein.

Abstract:

A machine parts protecting system for protecting those parts of a machine that may be in close proximity to high temperature flames. This system is for a machine used for processing workpieces and has a plurality of workpiece holding members which are indexed in a stop-and-go fashion through a number of operating stations. The protecting system includes a photo-detector to detect that a workpiece is not being held by one of the workpiece holding members and to send a first signal to a memory circuit which retains that information until a predetermined time when the empty workpiece holding member arrives at an operating station with high temperature flames. At that time the memory circuit initiates a second signal opening a solenoid valve, thereby permitting an air jet to blow the high temperature flames away from the empty workpiece holding member.

Abstract:

An HID lamp utilizes a thin, fragile, strip-like conductor member affixed to and carried on a portion of the inner surface of the lamp protective envelope. Upon breakage of the protective envelope, the fragile conductor will break and interrupt the electrical continuity of the lamp's electrical circuit, thereby rendering the lamp inoperative.
