Abstract:
A method and system for measuring a strength of a test specimen are provided. The method includes the steps of selecting a tensile load of interest for the test specimen, and bulk heating the test specimen at a localized region such that the test specimen is placed under the tensile load of interest. The method further provides for determining whether the tensile load of interest has caused a failure at the localized region. Bulk heating the test specimen provides a non-destructive evaluation technique that is unachievable through conventional approaches.

Abstract:
An optical impact fuze employing a transparent nose of a target seeking missile as a light transmission medium which deforms upon impact to reduce optical transmission and initiate a fuzing signal. Alternatively, one or more optically transmissive filaments can be positioned at or near a predetermined target impact point on a vehicle so that a fuzing signal is initiated upon the detection of an abrupt decrease in light transmitted by the filament resulting from target contact.

Abstract:
A remote sensing device comprising light generating means positioned in the vicinity of an event being measured and means for conducting the generated light to a remote location. The light generating means advantageously comprises an optical emission mechanical transducer or bioluminescent device, or current generating means coupled with a light emitting diode, semiconductor laser or filament bulb. Also disclosed is a method according to the invention.
Speaking of podcast listens, University of Nebraska professor John Shrader interviewed several sports media writers around the country for a podcast about covering the people who put on the games you watch. Worth your time.
