  • Method And Apparatus For Monitoring The Autonomic Nervous System Using Non-Stationary Spectral Analysis Of Heart Rate And Respiratory Activity

    view source
  • US Patent:
    7079888, Jul 18, 2006
  • Filed:
    Mar 12, 2003
  • Appl. No.:
    10/387070
  • Inventors:
Harry Oung - Philadelphia PA, US
Joseph Colombo - Richboro PA, US
  • Assignee:
    Ansar, Inc. - Philadelphia PA
  • International Classification:
    A61B 5/0402
  • US Classification:
    600513
  • Abstract:
A method and apparatus for non-invasive, real-time monitoring of the autonomic nervous systems using non-stationary spectral analysis of both heart rate and respiratory signals. Continuous wavelet transformation is used in real-time so that the dynamic interactions between the sympathetic and parasympathetic divisions of the autonomic nervous system can be independently monitored in the frequency domain. The method in accordance with the present invention allows spectral analysis, formerly limited to the study of stationary data, to be applied to time-varying biological data such as heart rate variability and respiratory activity. In addition, the same techniques are used to monitor other biological or physiological data, including blood pressure.

  • International Classification:
    A61B 5/0402
  • US Classification:
    600513
  • Abstract:
The present invention is a method and apparatus for non-invasive, real-time monitoring of the autonomic nervous systems. The present invention allows for monitoring of the autonomic nervous system using spectral analysis of both heart rate and respiratory signals. A preferred embodiment uses short-time Fourier transform (STFT) with a novel modified Bartlett windowing scheme in real-time so that the dynamic interactions between the sympathetic and parasympathetic divisions of the autonomic nervous system can be independently monitored. In addition, a preferred embodiment of the present invention uses the same techniques to monitor other biological or physiological data, including continuous blood pressure.
  • Electrocardiogram Derived Respiration Signal For Parasympathetic And Sympathetic Monitoring Devices

  • US Patent:
    20130274616, Oct 17, 2013
  • Filed:
    Nov 2, 2012
  • Appl. No.:
    13/667769
  • Inventors:
THE ANSAR GROUP INC. - , US
Joseph Colombo - Richboro PA, US
Robert Welch - Media PA, US
  • Assignee:
THE ANSAR GROUP INC. - Philadelphia PA
  • International Classification:
    A61B 5/00
    A61B 5/0456
    A61B 5/04
    A61B 5/0205
  • US Classification:
    600484
  • Abstract:
The invention presents a method for deriving respiratory data from single lead ECG recordings for monitoring the autonomic nervous system, specifically the parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous systems independently and simultaneously. The ECG derived respiration for ANS monitoring devices generally includes a method for non-invasive monitoring of the respiratory activity for the assessment of the parasympathetic and sympathetic (P&S) branches of the autonomic nervous system. The EDR signal is used to analyze and assess the individual activities of, and interactions between the sympathetic and parasympathetic divisions of the ANS. The present invention applies a QRS peak detection algorithm to ECG signal. The peak amplitudes and respective time locations are then used to generate the respiration signal. The EDR provides an approximate but reliable estimate of the respiratory activity. The utility of the algorithm is tested for the P&S monitoring for the various tasks such as Normal Breathing (Baseline), Deep Breathing, Valsalva Maneuvers, and Standing, as well as for normal subjects, and ill and geriatric patients.
  • Motion Base Control Process And Pilot Perceptual Simulator

  • US Patent:
    50219820, Jun 4, 1991
  • Filed:
    Dec 28, 1988
  • Appl. No.:
    7/291290
  • Inventors:
Richard J. Crosbie - Langhorne PA
    Joseph Colombo - Newtown PA
  • Assignee:
    Veda Incorporated - Warminster PA
  • International Classification:
    G09B 908
  • US Classification:
    364578
  • Abstract:
A process for controlling a gimballed motion base system substantially duplicating pilot perceptions in a simulated aircraft. The process includes: a subprocess accounting for an effect of yaw on a motion base arm, a full-G bias function and a limited-G bias function, a low-G bias function, improved computation of pitch and roll gimbal commands to negate artifacts, a negative-G algorithm, allowing various yaw gimbal positions, allowing various cockpit orientations, and a yaw gimbal control process. A perceptual model based on emperically observed human response data predicts perceived pitch, roll, and yaw, and accounts for the fact that a Gy component of linear acceleration affects both roll and yaw perception.

  • Assignee:
    Tevital Incorporated - Berwyn PA
  • International Classification:
    A61B 500
  • US Classification:
    600300
  • Abstract:
A teleconferencing system uses video conferencing between a nurse station and a patient station to deliver medical care. The patient station is programmed to contain customized instructions concerning medications, procedures, or visitations that were placed there by the nurse. The customized audio, video and text information transforms the patient station into a highly personalized information source which can be reviewed by the patient when the unit is off line. Medical procedures and medications are also programmed into the patient station by the nurse to remind the patient of all scheduled events, including visitations. A record of medical compliance is stored in the patient station, which record is uploaded to the nurse station and compared to the original event schedule. In such manner, the patient station is an intelligent personal medical assistant, programmed by the nurse to provide customized reminders and information necessary for the efficient management of the patient's illness. The patient station is easy to use, including only four large buttons which are re-definable by notations on a video screen, and, for the convenience of the patient, the video camera at the patient station is remotely controlled by the nurse to obtain the desired view without requiring that the patient move.

  • Arterial Blood Velocity To Volume Flow Converter

  • US Patent:
    46676783, May 26, 1987
  • Filed:
    Aug 28, 1985
  • Appl. No.:
    6/770044
  • Inventors:
Richard J. Crosbie - Langhorne PA
    Joseph Colombo - Rochester NY
    J. Wallace Grant - Blacksburg VA
  • Assignee:
The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the Navy - Washington DC
  • International Classification:
    A61B 1000
  • US Classification:
    128663
  • Abstract:
A arterial blood velocity-to-volume flow rate converter, including a pair of function generators a computer, and a multiplier, is incorporated within a system to objectively measure by non-invasive means the blood volume flow rate to the head of an occupant in a rapidly accelerating vehicle, and take corrective measures to stabilize the vehicle when that flow falls below a preselected lower limit for a predetermined length of time. A conventional ultrasonic Doppler velocimeter determines the blood velocity, subsequently feeding a representative signal to pressure function generator. The output therefrom is then fed to a cross-sectional area signal generator which determines the time-varying area of the artery, a signal representing such being fed to the multiplier along with the velocity signal to compute the flow. When that flow falls below a pre-selected lower limit for a predetermined length of time as determined by a comparator and timer, a command signal is sent to override circuitry to stablize the vehicle.
