An apparatus and method for setting a gap between webs has a clamp assemblage which includes a pair of clamp members for securing and moving a trailing end of an expiring web into a spaced relations with the leading end of a fresh web. An actuator moves the clamp members securing the expiring web along guide rails to a predetermined position for setting the gap width between the ends of web.

Abstract:

An unported vacuum drum has a system of closely spaced small grooves in the outer surface thereof and holes drilled in the drum provide communication between the grooves on the outer surface and a space on the interior of the drum. The interior drum can be connected to a source of vacuum for applying the vacuum through the holes to the grooves. In order to avoid defects that may occur in a web brought into contact with a drum, the outer surface of the drum is covered with a porous sleeve. The pores in the sleeve enable the vacuum to be applied from the grooves to the outer surface of the sleeve for holding the web onto the sleeve.

Abstract:

An apparatus and method for continuously self aligning a first surface with a second roller has an adjustable support member for the first surface which produces movements of the first roller that corresponds to movements of the second roller. The adjustable support member supporting the first roller uses a plurality of bearings, preferably thrust bearings, arranged on the frame supporting the first roller which alignable controls the movements of the first roller in contact with the second roller.
