  • International Classification:
    G01R 31/08
  • US Classification:
    370238, 370229, 370400, 370401
  • Abstract:
A method and system for augmenting routing decisions in a network switching device with topology information acquired using source learning are disclosed. In the preferred embodiment, the method of selecting a port to transmit an outbound flow from a first node to a second node comprises the steps of identifying a plurality of ports associated with minimal equal-cost paths from the first node to the second node, and if an inbound flow from the second node is detected on a first port of the plurality of ports of the first node, then transmitting the outbound flow from the first port. In the absence of an inbound flow from the second node, the first node generally selects the port for the outbound flow from the plurality of minimal equal-cost paths. The present invention allows a switching device to take advantage of the path determination made at another router in the network while avoiding inconsistencies between conventional route selection operations and IP source learning in switching devices adapted to perform bridging on IP address.
  • Method And Apparatus For Handling Traffic In A Data Communication Network

    view source
  • US Patent:
    8472444, Jun 25, 2013
  • Filed:
    Jun 30, 2010
  • Appl. No.:
    12/827891
  • Inventors:
Sahil P. Dighe - Salt Lake City UT, US
Joseph F. Olakangil - Midvale UT, US
  • Assignee:
    Alcatel Lucent - Paris
  • International Classification:
    H04L 12/28
  • US Classification:
    370392, 370401
  • Abstract:
A method and apparatus for offloading data traffic routing from one NI (network interface) to another. The NI receives data traffic, and that portion of the data traffic that must be L3 routed is passed to the CPU of the NI though a token bucket meter or equivalent metering device that selectively designates a portion of the routing traffic to another NI for routing. The portion of the traffic designated corresponds to the capacity of the CPU and offloading a portion of the data traffic helps to reduce the number of packets that are discarded when a CPU is overloaded. The threshold for determining when and in what quantity the data traffic should be offloaded is either statically or dynamically set, and in the latter case may be updated automatically when traffic levels and, in some implementations, other considerations require.
  • Tri-Colour Data Packet Counting For Tri-Colour Marking Policies

    view source
  • US Patent:
    8559331, Oct 15, 2013
  • Filed:
    Sep 13, 2010
  • Appl. No.:
    12/880373
  • Inventors:
Joseph F. Olakangil - Midvale UT, US
  • Assignee:
    Alcatel Lucent - Paris
  • International Classification:
    G01R 31/08
    H04J 1/16
  • US Classification:
    370253, 370252, 370230, 370392, 370400, 709200, 709224
  • Abstract:
The invention is directed to counting data packets marked according to tri-color marking techniques. Packets of a packet flow that are marked according to a three color (or tri-color) marking scheme are counted using a counter implemented on a ternary content addressable memory (TCAM). Advantages of some embodiments of the invention are to enable the use of generic and cost-efficient TCAMs to quickly obtain the counts of all three colors of packets in such a packet flow. These counts can be used to provide detailed statistics on characteristics of the packet flow, which can be useful for debugging and accounting purposes.

  • Abstract:
Aggregation Switches connected via a virtual fabric link (VFL) are each active and able to communicate via an inter-process communication (IPC) using an IPC Virtual Local Area Network (IPC VLAN). A sub-set of Customer-facing ports (CFPs) of each Aggregation Switch are coupled to the VFL and assigned to the IPC VLAN to enable communication therebetween.
  • Dhcp Address Conflict Detection/Enforcement

  • US Patent:
    8606940, Dec 10, 2013
  • Filed:
    Feb 6, 2008
  • Appl. No.:
    12/012878
  • Inventors:
Sahil Dighe - Salt Lake City UT, US
Joseph Olakangil - Midvale UT, US
  • Assignee:
    Alcatel Lucent - Paris
  • International Classification:
    G06F 15/16
  • US Classification:
    709229, 709227, 709228
  • Abstract:
The present invention resolves IP address conflicts in a network with DHCP or other address assignment protocol when some host on the network uses a conflicting static IP address to an IP address assigned to another host. The preferred method involves offering a given IP address to a host/node through the address assignment protocol while also detecting any other host/node using the offered IP address on a given VLAN using address resolution protocol. If another host/node is using the IP address, the offending host/node may be blocked on that VLAN for a set amount of time.

  • International Classification:
    G06F 15/173
  • US Classification:
    709239
  • Abstract:
An exemplary method directs client devices client devices in a computing network to a remediation node. A subset of the client devices to receives remediation services is identified with a single common label. Upon determining that one of the client devices originating a communication request packet is identified by the single common label, processing the communication request packet by routing the communication request packet to a redirection server, and transmitting from the redirection server to the one client device a hypertext transfer protocol (HTTP) command specifying that the one client device redirect communications to the remediation node so that remediation services can be supplied to the one client device via the remediation node.

Each policy list is configured for influencing flow of a respective portion of traffic in a prescribed manner through the traffic control equipment. An operation is performed for assigning a unique identifier to each policy list and an operation is performed for assigning each portion of the traffic the unique identifier of one of the policy lists. Thereafter, an operation is performed for establishing within the policy space an association between each portion of the traffic and one of the policy lists dependent upon matching the assigned identifiers thereof whereby the flow of each portion of the traffic through the traffic control equipment is influenced by the associated policy list.
