Joseph William Thornton " Joseph William Thornton " ( born Sheffield, England, 1870; died 1919 ) founded the Thorntons chocolate company, famous for its chocolates and toffee, when he opened his first shop at 159 Norfolk Street, Sheffield, in 1911.

Joseph Thornton " Joseph Thornton " ( 1808–1891 ) was a bookseller who founded Thornton's Bookshop in 1835 in Oxford, England, the oldest university bookshop in the city.
He then moved to 51 High Street, Oxford in 1840. He moved back to Magdalen Street in 1853 and to 10 Broad Street, Oxford in 1863.
