Abstract:

A plasma antenna generator includes a ceramic portion including an ionizable material, an explosive charge adapted to project at least part of the ceramic portion upon detonation at a velocity sufficient to ionize the ionizable material, and a detonator coupled with the explosive charge. A plasma antenna generator includes a housing defining a plurality of openings therein and a plurality of shaped charge devices or a plurality of explosively formed projectile devices received in the openings. Each of the devices includes an explosive charge, a detonator coupled with the explosive charge, and a ceramic liner, the ceramic liner comprising an ionizing material. A method includes providing an explosive device and a ceramic portion comprising an ionizable material disposed proximate the explosive device, detonating the explosive device to propel the ceramic portion, and ionizing the ionizable material to form at least one plasma trail.

Abstract:

A device for inhibiting inadvertent initiation of a munition includes a sorbing refrigeration device adapted to at least partially surround an energetic material of the munition. A container includes an energetic material and a sorbing refrigeration device at least partially surrounding the energetic material. A method for inhibiting an inadvertent initiation of a munition includes cooling an energetic material of the munition by sorption refrigeration.

Abstract:

Methods useful in the manufacture of phosphate bonded ceramics. The invention is a method for impregnation of a green body to be fired to form a ceramic having the steps of: (a) forming a green body of unreacted ceramic materials; (b) determining the pore volume of the green body; (c) determining the amount of phosphoric acid required to react with the green body at a desired level; (d) making in impregnation solution of phosphoric acid and a carrier liquid having a ratio of phosphoric acid to carrier liquid equal to the ratio of (i) the volume of phosphoric acid determined for the reaction with the green body to (ii) the volume of carrier fluid equal to the pore volume of the green body minus the volume of the phosphoric acid determined for the reaction; (e) impregnating the green body with said solution of phosphoric acid and carrier fluid; and (f) firing the impregnated green body to form a phosphate bonded ceramic.
