Abstract:

A computer implemented method, data processing system, and computer program product for generating and applying a model to predict hardware performance hazards in a machine instruction sequence. The illustrative embodiments generate rules which specify relationships between a first instruction code sequence and hardware performance hazards. This rule generation is performed as a machine task rather than a human task (e.g., traditional hand coding tools). When a second instruction code sequence is received, the rules are applied to the second instruction code sequence. Responsive to a prediction that execution of the second instruction code sequence will cause the hardware performance hazards, instructions in the second instruction code sequence that cause the hardware performance hazards are identified.

Abstract:

A method for receiving a data stream that includes data samples, each data sample having one of a plurality of actual values. For each data sample in the data stream, a first index in a dictionary is selected. The dictionary includes indices corresponding to each of the plurality of actual values. The first index corresponds to an actual value of the data sample. A predicted value of the data sample is generated in response to previously received data samples in the data stream and to a prediction algorithm. A second index in the dictionary that corresponds to an actual value in the dictionary that is closest to the value of the predicted value is selected. The difference between the first index and the second index is calculated and compressed. The compressed difference between the first index and the second index is then output. This process is performed for each data sample in the data stream.

Abstract:

A digital computer includes a main and an auxiliary pipeline processor which are configured to concurrently execute contiguous groups of instructions taken from a single instruction sequence. The instructions in a sequence may be divided into groups by using either taken-branch instructions or certain instructions which may change the contents of the general purpose registers as group delimiters. Both methods of grouping the instructions use a branch history table to predict the sequence in which the instructions will be executed.

Abstract:

A cache memory system develops an optimum sequence for transferring data values between a main memory and a line buffer internal to the cache. At the end of a line transfer, the data in the line buffer is written into the cache memory as a block. Following an initial cache miss, the cache memory system monitors the sequence of data requests received for data in the line that is being read in from main memory. If the sequence being used to read in the data causes the processor to wait for a specific data value in the line, a new sequence is generated in which the specific data value is read at an earlier time in the transfer cycle. This sequence is associated with the instruction that caused the first miss and is used for subsequent misses caused by the instruction. If, in the process of handling a first miss related to a specific instruction, a second miss occurs which is caused by the same instruction but which is for data in a different line of memory, the sequence associated with the instruction is marked as an ephemeral miss. Data transferred to the line buffer in response to an ephemeral miss is not stored in the cache memory and limited to that portion of the line accessed within the line buffer.

Abstract:

A multi-prediction branch prediction mechanism predicts each conditional branch at least twice, first during the instruction-fetch phase of the pipeline and then again during the decode phase of the pipeline. The mechanism uses at least two different branch prediction mechanisms, each a separate and independent mechanism from the other. A set of rules are used to resolve those instances as to when the predictions differ.

Abstract:

A method and apparatus for displaying data on a computer display system. More specifically, with this invention location information of data from an application program is converted to location information for displaying data within a number of contours on a display device. With this invention display data for a logical display area on a first contour is converted to display data for a plurality of contours, where each of the later contours is a logical section of the former contour. More importantly, this conversion is transparent to the application program. The second display data is then displayed on the display device of the computer system.
