Abstract:
This invention pertains to the discovery that fibroblast growth factor 2 (FGF2) stimulates neurogenesis, induces migration of newborn cells into the striatum and cortex, is neuroprotective, and significantly extends the lifespan mammals suffering from neurodegenerative conditions (e.g., Huntington's disease, Parkinson's disease, etc.). In certain embodiments this invention provides a method of promoting neurogenesis, neuroprotection and/or survival in a mammal having a neurodegenerative disease by upregulating expression or availability of endogenous fibroblast growth factor 2 (FGF2) in said mammal; and/or administering FGF2 or an FGF2 mutein to the mammal in an amount sufficient to promote neurogenesis, neuroprotection and/or survival of the mammal.
Mao-B Elevation As An Early Parkinson's Disease Biomarker
This invention pertains to development of a new animal model for Parkinson's Disease (PD) and to the discovery that elevated monoamine oxygenase B (MOA-B) expression and/or activity is a strong prognostic indicator for the disease. Accordingly, in certain embodiments, methods are provided for identifying a mammal at risk for Parkinson's disease. The methods typically involve determining level of expression or activity of monoamine oxidase B (MAO-B) in a sample from the mammal wherein an elevated level of MAO-B expression and/or activity as compared to a control (reference) is an indicator that the mammal has an increased likelihood of developing Parkinson's disease.

Abstract:
In various embodiments methods of delaying the onset of and/or mitigating the severity of one or more symptoms of Parkinson's disease in a mammal are provided. In certain embodiments the methods involve administering to a mammal diagnosed as having or as at risk for Parkinson's disease a chronic low dose of lithium (e.g., a subtherapeutic dose). In certain embodiments the low dose lithium is administered in conjunction with another agent (e.g., L-DOPA).
Iron Sequestration Or Elimination To Reduce Neurodegeneration Or Parkinsons Disease Progression
This invention pertains to the discovery that elevated level of free iron causal in the onset and/or progression of diseases characterized by neural degeneration (e.g., Parkinson's Disease). It was also discovered that lowering free iron levels can inhibit (e.g. reduce or eliminate) the onset and/or progression of one or more symptoms of such diseases. Thus, in one embodiment this invention provides a method of inhibiting neural degeneration in a mammal. The method involves reducing free iron levels in a neural tissue of said animal in an amount sufficient to inhibit neural degeneration in said neural tissue.

Abstract:
In various embodiments compounds that induce and/or promote autophagy are provided as wells as methods of use thereof (e.g., in the prophylaxis or treatment of chronic pathologies associated with aging). In one illustrative, but non-limiting embodiments the compound(s) comprise, inter alia, coumarin 106.
