Abstract:

The present invention provides to a method and apparatus for minimizing or preventing negative current build up in DC-DC converters with synchronous rectification. The method turns the first synchronous rectifier off when the negative current is present in the first secondary winding and the first synchronous rectifier is on, and turns the second synchronous rectifier off when the negative current is present in the second secondary winding and the second synchronous rectifier is on.

Abstract:

A power converter employing a magnetic device including a magnetic core and first and second tapped windings. Each winding of the magnetic device has first and second winding sections, respectively, coupled to the magnetic core, wherein the first and second winding sections are formed from a formed and folded planar conductive sheet. The magnetic core includes a common leg, a plurality of outer legs, and a top plate. The first and second winding sections are constructed with a formed and folded planar conductive sheet formed with structures usable as pins in a through-hole, surface-mount, or combined printed wiring board assembly process. The outer legs at either end of the magnetic core are positioned back from magnetic core ends, and the magnetic core is formed with a stepped structure to accommodate winding pins in a surface-mount printed wiring board assembly process.

Abstract:

An inductor configuration (50) comprising a three-legged inductor core (20) with a first leg (22), second leg (24), and third leg (26) integrally extending from a base (28). The first leg (22) and second leg (24) are predisposed and spaced about a first surface (30) of the base (28) to form a first channel area (32). Abstract:

A self-driven synchronous rectifier circuit (42) for a power converter. The circuit comprises a transformer (49, 70) having a secondary winding with a first and second terminal, a first synchronous rectifier (14) coupled to the second transformer terminal and having a control terminal, and a second synchronous rectifier (16) coupled to the first transformer terminal and having a control terminal. The circuit (42) also comprises a first switch (44) coupled to the first synchronous rectifier (14) control terminal, and a second switch (46) coupled to the second synchronous rectifier (16) control terminal. The first (44) and second switch (46) are also coupled to the secondary winding. Switching transitions of the first (14) and second (16) synchronous rectifiers are initiated by a polarity reversal of the voltage of the secondary transformer winding.

Abstract:

An external driving circuit (21) for a bridge type synchronous rectifier circuit (20) having a first and second first synchronous rectifier (Q3,Q4), a primary driving circuit (14), and a pair of totem pole drivers (16,18). The timing signal for the first and second synchronous rectifiers (Q3,Q4) is derived from the external driving circuit (21). The external driving circuit (21) includes a first and second switch drivers (22,24). The external driving circuit (21) is interfaced with the synchronous rectifier circuit (20) by connecting first and second switch drivers (22,24) to the totem pole drivers (16,18). The first and second switch drivers (22,24) provides storage for circuit current which is fully discharged at the appropriate time to facilitate turning on and off the synchronous rectifiers (Q3,Q4).
