Abstract:

A metal-coupling composition composed of silane cross-linking and coupling agents wherein the coupling agent includes a vinyl moiety. The coupling composition is a replacement for iron-phosphatizing/chromate primering and chromate primering in zinc phosphatizing processes. In a preferred embodiment, the silane cross-linking agent has the following formula: and X is a trivalent group, each Y is independently a divalent group or series of divalent groups, each Q is independently —R or —OR and each R is independently a Calkyl group or aryl group, and —OR group(s) are hydrolysable;and the silane coupling agent has the following formula: each Q is independently —R or —OR and each R is independently a Calkyl group or aryl group, and —OR group(s) are hydrolysable;.

Abstract:

A manganese modified low zinc phosphate conversion coating is applied to a metal substrate by forming a coating composition having zinc ions, phosphate ions, nickel ions, manganese ions, and, optionally, iron ions, with a free acid range of 0.7 to 1.5 for spray applications, and 3.5 to 5.5 for immersion applications. The nitrate concentration is very low, generally less than 2000 ppm. The coating is applied with generation of minimal sludge, at lower temperatures, generally 120-160 F.

Abstract:

Embodiments of a method of pretreating a metal substrate prior to painting comprise applying a first coating solution onto the metal substrate wherein the first coating solution comprises polyaniline particles at a pH less than 7 to yield a first coating on the metal substrate, rinsing the metal substrate to remove unreacted polyaniline particles, and applying a second coating solution post-rinse which comprises at least one acid and a silane composition at a pH less than 7 to yield a second coating on the metal substrate.
