Abstract:

In video compression processing, such as MPEG-2 compression processing, the quantization (Q) matrix used to quantize discrete cosine transform (DCT) coefficients is updated from frame to frame based on a parameterized Q matrix adaptation algorithm. According to the algorithm, the Q matrix for the current frame is generated based on DCT coefficient data from the previously encoded frame of the same type (e. g. , I, P, or B) as the current frame. In particular, the Q matrix is generated using a function based on shape parameters (e. g. , the slope of the diagonal of the Q matrix and/or the convexity of the diagonal of the Q matrix), where the diagonal slope for the Q matrix of the current frame is generated based on the diagonal slope of a DCT map for the previously encoded frame. Before using the generated Q matrix to quantize the DCT coefficients for the current frame, the Q matrix is preferably adjusted for changes in the target mean from the previously encoded frame to the current frame.

Abstract:

The disclosed embodiments relate to a communication system and method. The system may comprise a pre-whitening device that applies pre-whitening data to a received signal from an antenna array to produce a pre-whitened signal, at least one detector that is adapted to recognize a pattern corresponding to a request for access in the pre-whitened signal and compute correlation data corresponding to the pattern, and a threshold detector that determines whether the correlation data exceeds a threshold and indicates that an acknowledgement signal should be transmitted if the threshold is exceeded. The method may comprise the acts of creating a pre-whitened signal by applying pre-whitening data to a received signal, detecting a pattern that corresponds to a request for access in the pre-whitened signal, computing correlation data corresponding to the pattern, determining whether the correlation data exceeds a threshold, and indicating that an acknowledgement signal should be transmitted if the threshold is exceeded.

A wireless communication system () includes using multiple antennas () for simultaneous transmissions to multiple mobile stations (). A distributed multiple antenna scheduling (DMAS) technique includes selecting a plurality of mobile stations for at least receiving simultaneous transmissions on at least one selected subcarrier from within a carrier bandwidth having orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM). In a disclosed example, a plurality of mobile stations are selected for each subcarrier within the carrier bandwidth. A disclosed example includes grouping subcarriers together into subsets to reduce computation complexity for determining which mobile stations to select for the simultaneous transmission.

Abstract:

The present invention provides a method for transmitting and receiving random access channel messages in an extended range wireless communication system. One embodiment of the method may include accumulating, at a base station, signal energy received during a first portion of a transmission time interval. The method may also include accumulating, at the base station, signal energy received during a second portion of the transmission time interval. The first and second portions are offset from the start or end of the transmission time interval by selected delay intervals. A point-of-sale electronic distribution system for distributing an access code (e. g. , a personal identification number (PIN)) is provided. The system allows retailers/distributors to purchase access codes for use with pre-paid products using conventional telephones and without requiring the use of a dedicated terminal or personal computer at the point-of-sale.
