Abstract:
Methods are provided for in-situ detection of varnish and/or deposit precursors in a lubricant in a lubricating environment. An electrostatic accumulator can be used within a lubricating environment to enhance accumulation of varnish and/or deposit precursors on portions of the electrostatic accumulator. The deposits accumulated on the electrostatic accumulator can then be characterized in-situ. The potential difference across portions of the electrostatic accumulator can cause an enhanced rate of deposit accumulation on the electrostatic accumulator, which can facilitate characterization of the tendency of a lubricant to accumulate deposits in the lubricating environment.

Abstract:
A lubricating oil base stock including one or more monoesters represented by the formula (I), (II), (III) and (IV) as defined herein. The lubricating oil base stock has a high temperature high shear (HTHS) viscosity of less than about 1.7 cP as determined by ASTM D4683, and a Noack volatility from about 15 to about 90 percent as determined by ASTM D5800. A lubricating oil containing the lubricating oil base stock including one or more monoesters represented by the formula (I), (II), (III) and (IV) as defined herein. A method for improving one or more of thermal and oxidative stability, solubility and dispersancy of polar additives, deposit control and traction control in a lubricating oil by using as the lubricating oil a formulated oil containing the lubricating oil base stock including one or more monoesters represented by the formula (I), (II), (III) and (IV) as defined herein.

Abstract:
A method for improving thermo-oxidative stability and elastomer compatibility in an apparatus lubricated with a lubricating oil by using as the lubricating oil a formulated oil including a lubricating oil base stock. The lubricating oil base stock includes a di-alkylated aromatic base stock of the formula:wherein each Ris the same or different and represents a C-Calkyl group; Rrepresents an aromatic moiety. The di-alkylated aromatic base stock includes at least 44 wt % dialkylate product. Thermo-oxidative stability and elastomer compatibility are improved as compared to thermo-oxidative stability and elastomer compatibility achieved using a lubricating oil base stock other than the di-alkylated aromatic base stock. A lubricating oil including the di-alkylated base stock of the above formula, and the di-alkylated aromatic base stock of the above formula.
