Abstract:

A heat exchange system using pressurized air and a flowing liquid having a controlled temperature for cooling or heating a portion of a human body. The system includes a compliant heat exchange splint and a dual function control unit. The splint includes a liquid bladder containing flowing liquid and an air bladder containing pressurized air for compressing the liquid bladder into close conformal contact with a body part of a person for cooling or heating the body part. The liquid and air bladders are defined by a common peripheral seal. The flowing liquid and the pressurized air enter and exit the splint directly into the liquid and air bladders through planar ports. The control unit includes a liquid circuit for providing the flowing fluid at a controlled temperature and an air circuit for providing the pressurized air. The control unit housing includes a coolant tub and a pivoting cover assembly that uses snaps for latching in closed positions for operation and in an open position for accessing the elements of the liquid and air circuits. The snaps in the closed position use mating protrusions and cavities, and in the open position a tongue and groove.

An acoustic inspection system includes acoustic transducers to transmit and receive continuous acoustic waves at a constant frequency. Changes in phase and/or amplitude of acoustic waves reflected at different times from a fixed reference target through an isothermal transmission medium are detected. The temperature of the acoustic transmission path is controlled in response to the detected phase changes to maintain the wavelength of acoustic waves constant independent of changes in humidity and barometric pressure.

Abstract:

A manufacturing system is described for sequentially bending a plurality of planar spring elements extending from a regularly perforated bar or fret, then adjusting the resiliency of each element to provide a precise load when deflected to a particular position, and finally shearing only those elements meeting the desired deflection load criteria from the fret. A microprocessor obtains necessary processing data while controlling the several stations at which the spring elements are measured, formed (bent), thermally adjusted and sheared from the fret. A walking beam transport system also controlled by the microprocesser incremently transports the frets of spring elements between and through each station. An oven can be incorporated into the walking beam transport system between the forming and thermal adjust stations for stress relieving the spring elements before adjustment. Particular features of the system include a translating shuttle mechanism with a plurality of parallel rails for loading frets onto the walking beam transport system, linear cam actuators for moving load cells into engagement with a load arm extending from each spring element, a resilient deflecting guard mechanism protecting the sensor head of the load cells, and a precision bending mechanism in which a pair of pivotably mounted and orthogonally related linear bearing races support carriages translated by a pair of orthogonally related linear actuators for rolling a bending element around a cylindrical mandrel.

Abstract:

A reusable, evacuable enclosure comprising a bag with an opening in which to place compressible articles, such as clothing or linen, and a one-way valve in a surface of the bag. Compressible articles may be placed in the bag and sealed from the surrounding environment by placing a seal across the opening. The excess air in the bag may then be removed by placing a cylindrical attachment of a household vacuum cleaner over the one-way valve. Once the excess air is extracted, a cap is placed over the valve to ensure a permanent seal. Removal of excess air reduces the size of the compressible article and inhibits the growth of insects and bacteria, which may damage the contents of the bag. Moreover, the enclosure is impervious to moisture, and so inhibits the growth of mildew.
