A method is disclosed for operating a mobile station. The method has a first step of storing data into a memory within the mobile station, the stored data including at least one system operator code (SOC) having an assigned priority value. Upon the mobile station receiving a system identification (SID) associated with the stored SOC, the method stores the SID into the memory so as to have the same priority value that is assigned to the SOC. When the mobile station subsequently receives a transmission containing the SID and not the SOC, the mobile station accesses the memory to determine the priority value associated with the SID, and then controls the operation of the mobile station based on the determined priority value. The step of controlling the operation of the mobile station preferably controls at least one of a scanning behavior or a camping behavior of the mobile station.
Geographic Area Assisted System Selection For Mobile Stations
A method includes determining a location of a mobile station, comparing the location to information that is descriptive of a map that is stored in the mobile station and deriving at least one system selection parameter from the mobile station's location relative to the map. The system selection parameter can be one or more of a band of frequencies, including a license block, within which the mobile station may obtain access to a desired system, a frequency channel on which the mobile station may obtain access to a desired system, and a protocol to be used by the mobile station to obtain access to a desired system. The system selection parameter can be used to select a public system, or it can be used to select a non-public system. The determination of the location of the mobile station can be performed by the mobile station without assistance from a network operator, or by the mobile station with assistance from the network operator, or by the network operator. In the latter case the determined location is transmitted to the mobile station from the network operator.
A method and system of background scanning of an evaluated system by a mobile station without missing paging frames on a registered system. The registered system is defined as the system in which the mobile station has registered and will receive pages. The evaluated system is the system from which the mobile station must retrieve parameters (the possibly higher priority system). The various disclosed embodiments use the periodicity of the paging information to set a guard timer that will force the system back to the registered system before the paging information in the next time slot is missed. After receiving the paging information, the mobile station can continue its search and evaluation of base systems. In other words, the guard timer breaks the background scan into smaller segments that are performed between retrievals of paging information.
Network Assisted Background Scanning For Mobile Stations
A method includes determining, at a network operator, a location of a mobile station, determining if the location of the mobile station indicates that the mobile station may gain access to another allowed network operator and, if so, transmitting a message to the mobile station for assisting the mobile station in gaining access to the other, allowed network operator. If the location of the mobile station indicates that the mobile station may not gain access to another allowed network operator, the method further transmits a message to the mobile station for inhibiting background scanning by the mobile station. The message preferably includes information that is descriptive of a frequency on which the mobile station may receive a transmission from the other, allowed network operator.
Methods, Apparatuses, And Computer Program Products For Providing Broadband Audio Signals Associated With Navigation Instructions
Methods, apparatuses, and computer program products are herein provided for providing broadband audio signal navigation instructions. A method may include determining a broadband audio signal associated with at least one navigation instruction. The method may further include causing the broadband audio signal to be provided to the user. The broadband audio signal may be a representation of an audio signal with components in all frequencies capable of being at least one of perceived or broadcast by a speaker. Corresponding apparatuses and computer program products are also provided.
