Philadelphia media reports indicate that he was released from prison in 2013. Larry Traylor, spokesman for the Virginia Department of Corrections, said that Barness probation was transferred from Pennsylvania to Williamsburg in November 2013 and that he was under community supervision.
Larry Traylor, a Department of Corrections spokesman, said there was a "several minute" delay in the procedure as medical technicians had difficulty locating the proper spot for one of the two IV lines. Traylor said that was longer than normal. There were no other complications.

Virginia Department of Corrections spokesman Larry Traylor said the agency received five shipments of pentobarbital before the restrictions were imposed in late June. The agency is developing contingency plans for future executions in light of the restrictions, he said, but would not elaborate.
