    A relief image printing element with an integral imageable printing surface and a method of preparing the relief image printing element are described. The relief image printing element comprises a dimensionally stable base layer; a floor layer comprised of a cured polymer selected from the group consisting of photopolymers, and polymers with a resilience of at least 40% when cured; and at least one layer of an imageable material. Most preferably, the floor layer created by curing the layer through the top of the printing element by face exposure. The printing element may also contain a compressible layer between the base layer and the floor layer.

    A method of controlling the shape of a plurality of relief dots created in a photosensitive printing blank during a digital platemaking process is provided. The photosensitive printing blank comprises a laser ablatable mask layer disposed on at least one photocurable layer. The method comprises the steps of: a) laser ablating the laser ablatable mask layer to create an in situ negative in the laser ablatable mask layer; b) applying a barrier membrane to the photosensitive printing blank; c) exposing the at least one photocurable layer to actinic radiation through the in situ negative; and d) developing the imaged and exposed photosensitive printing blank to reveal the relief image therein, said relief image comprising the plurality of relief dots.

    The present invention is directed to an improved method of producing photosensitive printing plate blanks comprising the steps of: a) forming a first photocurable layer on a backing sheet; b) curing the first photocurable layer with actinic radiation to create a hard floor layer throughout the first photocurable layer; and c) forming a second photocurable layer on top of the cured first photocured layer that is processible by actinic radiation to form a relief image printing element. The printing plate blank having the precured floor layer may then be delivered to a print shop customer for further processing to produce a relief image printing element.

    A method of preparing a photosensitive printing blank, the method comprising the steps of: a) coating a slip film onto a coversheet and drying the slip film; and depositing at least one layer of photosensitive material on top of the slip film coated coversheet and laminating a substrate layer to the exposed surface of the photosensitive material. The slip film comprises: i) a polymer selected from the group consisting of polystyrene and polyvinylpyrrolidone; ii) optionally, an additive. The slip film at least substantially eliminates the formation of hot spots during an analog plate making process.

    A method of producing a flexographic printing plate using a continuous liquid interphase is provided herein. This method allows for significantly reduced production times and fewer preparation steps compared to standard non-continuous techniques and results in less waste than typical methods for preparing flexographic printing plates. The printing plate provided by using continuous liquid interphase production results in a printing plate with desirable elastomeric elongation, desirable hardness, plate thickness in the range of 0.030 inches to 0.250 inches, and comprises printing dots with desirable characteristics.

A defined topographical pattern is transferred from the textured surface of the roller to the at least one photocurable layer.
