  • Catheter For Cardiac Injection And Method For Delivery Of Therapeutic Agents To Specified Tissues

    view source
  • US Patent:
    20040044329, Mar 4, 2004
  • Filed:
    Aug 29, 2002
  • Appl. No.:
    10/230497
  • Inventors:
Leonard Trudell - Warwick RI, US
  • International Classification:
    A61M031/00
  • US Classification:
    604/507000, 604/165020
  • Abstract:
Featured is a system for delivering a fluid or therapeutic agent to target tissue of an organ, such as a heart. Such a delivery system includes a catheter having a distal end portion, a proximal end portion and a lumen extending therebetween and a delivery device movably disposed within the catheter at the distal end portion thereof, the delivery device having a first end portion that is configured and arranged for penetrating the target tissue. The distal end portion of the catheter is also configured and arranged such that when the delivery device is extended beyond the distal end portion of the catheter, a portion of the delivery device that is disposed within the distal end portion of the catheter is put into fluid communication with the lumen, whereby fluid or therapeutic agent being communicated via the lumen is fluidly coupled to the first end portion of the delivery device and thence for delivery to the target tissue.
  • Biphasic Foam Blood Mass Transfer Device

    A61M 114
    A61M 134
  • US Classification:
    521 99
  • Abstract:
The present invention relates to apparatus for transferring constituents into and out of a fluid such as blood. The apparatus includes a biphasic foam body which functions as a blood oxygenator, blood dialyzer, or other blood mass transfer device.
  • Diameter Expansion Cannula

    view source
  • US Patent:
    51585456, Oct 27, 1992
  • Filed:
    May 2, 1991
  • Appl. No.:
    7/694949
  • Inventors:
Leonard A. Trudell - East Greenwich RI
Anthony D. Whittemore - Sherborn MA
  • Assignee:
Brigham and Women's Hospital - Boston MA
  • International Classification:
    A61M 3100
  • US Classification:
    604 53
  • Abstract:
The present invention is a diameter expansion cannula apparatus which is used to establish fluid flow to a healthy blood vessel or to a diseased blood vessel. The cannula apparatus has a cannula which is coated with silicone and is formed of a braided construction which provides the cannula with an inherent resilience, yet allows the length of the cannula to become longer and the diameter of the cannula to become narrower when tension is applied along the longitudinal axis of the cannula. A peelable sheath is used to maintain the cannula in its elongated narrow state during insertion into a blood vessel. Removal of the sheath allows the cannula to return to its pre-tensioned diameter, thereby providing a radial force upon any obstruction within the blood vessel. The cannula apparatus is a self-contained unit which includes a sharpened point on the end of a balloon catheter to puncture the blood vessel of a patient and to assist the cannula in returning to its pre-tensioned diameter if any obstruction within the blood vessel prevents the cannula from returning to its pre-tensioned diameter.
  • Circulatory Support System

    view source
  • US Patent:
    50696610, Dec 3, 1991
  • Filed:
    May 18, 1988
  • Appl. No.:
    7/195594
  • Inventors:
Leonard A. Trudell - Warwick RI
  • Assignee:
Brigham and Women's Hospital - Boston MA
  • International Classification:
    A61M 3700
  • US Classification:
    604 4
  • Abstract:
A low-pressure, low blood trauma hemodynamic support system is disclosed. The system may operate as a relatively static-volume, gravity-fed, extracorporeal blood circulation and oxygenation system that consists essentially of (1) a membrane-type blood oxygenator, (2) a non-occlusive roller pump, and (3) connecting tubes. The tubes connect the system components to create a compact system capable of supporting a patient in circulatory dysfunction who is to undergo a transplant operation, and is awaiting a donor organ.
