An optical certifying head flies above a disc surface within an evanescent decay length of the disc surface. A light beam is focused through an objective lens, and further focused through a SIL. The SIL-focused light is coupled to the disc surface through near-field coupling. The light is reflected from the disc surface depending on a surface condition of the disc such that the surface condition can be determined.

Abstract:
A self-loading disc head-slider has a slider body, with a leading slider edge and a trailing slider edge, and first and second raised rails. Each raised rail has a leading rail edge, inside and outside rail edges and a bearing surface. A cavity dam extends between the first and second raised rails. A subambient pressure cavity trails the cavity dam, between the first and second raised rails. A stepped leading taper extends from the leading slider edge to the bearing surfaces of the first and second raised rails. The stepped leading taper is formed of first and second steps. The first step is positioned along the leading slider edge. The second step wraps around the leading rail edges of the first and second raised rails and extends along a portion of the inside and outside rail edges of the first and second raised rails. The first and second steps have a step height of 0. 05 to 1. 5 microns.

Abstract:
A medical device shaft including an unbalanced braid reinforcement layer. The reinforcement layer may be an unbalanced braid by having a first set of strands and a second set of strands, the sets wound in opposing directions on a mandrel or on the device shaft. The first set and second set may have different numbers of strands, sizes of strands, or pitch, or combinations thereof. In some embodiments, the unbalanced braid increases contact area between the inner layer and the outer layer of the shaft without compromising the function of the braid. In other embodiments, the variations in strand size and number between the first set and the second set allows improved kink and torque performance in a reduced thickness braid layer. The improved shaft of the present invention may be incorporated into a wide variety of medical devices such as guide catheters, diagnostic catheters, balloon catheters, etc.

A filar includes an inner conductive core that is formed of a low-resistivity material such as silver having a resistivity of less than 20 μΩ per centimeter. A conductive coil is provided around the core to form a filar. This coil is formed of a biocompatible alloy or super alloy having an ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of between 150 kilo pounds per square inch (ksi) and 280 ksi at room temperature. Examples of such alloys include CoCrMo, CoFeCrMo, and CoFeNiCrMo. In one specific embodiment, the alloy is MP35N (CoNiCrMo), which may be low-titanium (“low-ti”) MP35N. One or more such filars may be included within a wire. This wire may be carried by an implantable medical apparatus such as a lead, lead extension, or catheter. The wire may electrically couple elements such as connector electrodes to conducting electrodes or sensors.
