  • Blood Collection Valve

    view source
  • US Patent:
    41129245, Sep 12, 1978
  • Filed:
    Apr 7, 1977
  • Appl. No.:
    5/785656
  • Inventors:
Louis Thomas Ferrara - Brooklyn NY
    Janet Roccisano - Brooklyn NY
  • International Classification:
    A61B 500
  • US Classification:
    128 2F
  • Abstract:
A means to prevent backflow during vena-puncture by employing a one way valve in conjunction with an evacuated tubular element which has at its opened end a resilient stopper which is used to house or contain said valve and which acts as a sealant for the system. The stopper allows penetration by a special two-ended cannula which is threaded into a holder used to hold the tubular element during vena puncture. Blood flows from the vein, through the cannula, into the hollow portion of the stopper containing the valve and subsequently into the tubular element for storage. During blood collection, blood is prevented from backflowing by the closing action of the valve. In this manner contamination to the patient by particulate matter within the tubular element is prevented.

  • US Patent:
    43269591, Apr 27, 1982
  • Filed:
    Feb 4, 1981
  • Appl. No.:
    6/231490
  • Inventors:
Louis T. Ferrara - Brooklyn NY
  • International Classification:
    B01D 2126
  • US Classification:
    210515
  • Abstract:
A serum and cell separating and dispensing device comprising an elongated tubular vessel partitioned throughout its length forming two distinct compartments containing vent orifices on either side. One open end of the vessel is fitted with a resilient element containing a larger and smaller orifice respectively. These orifices communicate with the two compartments respectively. At the opposite end of the vessel are two small tubular vessels extending from and communicating with the compartments formed by the partition. Blood drawn in an evacuated collection tube such as Becton Dickinson's vacutainer is centrifuged after clotting. The device is forced into the open end of the collection tube and pressed downwardly. The resilient element forms an air trap by touching the inner wall of the collection tube and serum is forced through the orifice communicating with the serum compartment. The tubular vessel is turned slightly while the resilient element remains stationary and by so doing, the orifice communicating with the cellular compartment is open while the orifice of the serum compartment is closed.

  • US Patent:
    40837882, Apr 11, 1978
  • Filed:
    Nov 19, 1975
  • Appl. No.:
    5/633399
  • Inventors:
Louis T. Ferrara - Brooklyn NY
  • International Classification:
    B01D 2126
  • US Classification:
    210516
  • Abstract:
A blood serum separation unit which includes a tubular structure having openings at each of opposite ends and having a slidable disk element mounted within a base end thereof, having an outside diameter substantially less than an inside diameter of the tubular element such that upon centrifugal action the slidable disk will be slidable therewithin by torque of centrifugal action, and the tubular element being mounted substantially flushly within but removable from an outer tube having an upper open end and having a stopper-plug which when inserted plugs both the outer tubular container and the tubular element located therewithin, the plug being of a composition penetrable by a tubular needle for introducing blood from a subject to space within the tubular container and tubular element, the disk being of a specific gravity intermediate between those specific gravities of blood serum and blood coagulant precipitate whereby upon inversion of the blood-containing tube and the thereafter subjection of the same to centrifugal action forces, the coagulant precipitate is separated and compacted at an upper end of the tubular element by the disk and upon removal of the stopper-plug serum is left isolated in the remaining outer tube base, the coagulant precipitate having been removed with the inner tubular element.
  • Tissue Filtering Bath For Histology

  • US Patent:
    43774768, Mar 22, 1983
  • Filed:
    Feb 25, 1981
  • Appl. No.:
    6/237681
  • Inventors:
Louis T. Ferrara - Brooklyn NY
  • International Classification:
    B01D 3502
  • US Classification:
    210167
  • Abstract:
A multiplicity of filtering means used in manual and automatic modes are employed in combination intermittently with a temperature controlled water contaning vessel used in histo-pathological tissue processing. Tissue embedded in paraffin blocks is cut into thin sections of approximately 3 microns and placed on the heated water surface of the vessel whereby it spreads out so as to facilitate placing it on a glass slide for staining and subsequent microscopic examination for malignancy by the pathologist. During this process there is an accumulation of unwanted debris such as paraffin and tissue particulate matter. The filtering systems present a multiplicity of means to facilitate the maintenance of clean water by the use of electric pump filtration, strainer filtration, and skimmer filtration.
  • Blood Dispenser Device

  • US Patent:
    43991033, Aug 16, 1983
  • Filed:
    Jan 28, 1981
  • Appl. No.:
    6/229120
  • Inventors:
Louis T. Ferrara - Brooklyn NY
  • International Classification:
    G01N 100
    B65D 3528
  • US Classification:
    422100
  • Abstract:
In the blood Bank area of a clinical laboratory a blood dispensing device is described capable of being used in conjunction with tubing containing blood which is attached to a blood donor bag. The end of said tubing is fed through one end of said device until it passes through the opposite end of the device at which point means are available to cut the tubing. The device is fitted with a knurled wheel or roller guided by an inclined track or ramp which upon turning the wheel in one direction causes the tubing to be squeezed or compressed thus allowing blood to be dispensed in a controlled dropwise fashion. In the opposite direction the wheel decompresses the tubing allowing it to be fed through once again in order to repeat the process as desired.

  • Inventors:
Louis T. Ferrara - Brooklyn NY
  • International Classification:
    B01D 3322
  • US Classification:
    210399
  • Abstract:
A serum and cell separating and dispensing device comprising an elongated tubular vessel partitioned throughout its length forming two distinct compartments containing vent orifices on either side. One opened end of the vessel is fitted with a resilient element containing a larger and smaller orifice which houses a small and large pore filter respectively. The device is forced into the opened end of the collection tube and pressed downwardly. The resilient element forms an air trap by touching the inner wall of the collection tube and serum is forced through the orifices containing the filters. Due to the pore size of the filters and the size of the orifices, serum and cells become located within the separate compartments.

  • US Patent:
    41315499, Dec 26, 1978
  • Filed:
    May 16, 1977
  • Appl. No.:
    5/797357
  • Inventors:
Louis T. Ferrara - Brooklyn NY
  • International Classification:
    B01D 3300
    A61B 514
  • US Classification:
    210359
  • Abstract:
The invention relates to the collection of blood with the subsequent separation of serum after clotting for use in chemical analysis thereof. The device is used within an evacuated blood collection tube system in which the latter has a stopper to seal said tube from outside environment and to preserve the systems vacuum. This tube or system is used in conjunction with a special holder and specially designed two ended needle. The needle is threaded into one end of the holder allowing one end to exist within the confines of the holder. The evacuated tube is placed in said holder and after vena puncture is accomplished the tube is pressed forward thereby puncturing the rubber stopper and penetrating said stopper allows blood to enter the evacuated system. Within the glass tube is a plastic cylinder or tubular element in which the aforementioned blood being guided into this element or cylinder is allowed to clot when the serum is allowed to pass through a filter by the force of gravity and or centrifugation whereby said serum becomes located outside of said tubular element and finally being located within the confines of the glass tube. The tubular element is discarded along with the clot and cellular elements contained therein.
