  • Abstract:
Motors, such as DC motors, and methods and systems for operating a motor, are described. The motor is optionally an electronically commutated motor. The motor comprises one or more electromagnets and a controller device to control the electromagnets. The controller device is configured to calibrate the motor operation in a desired installation to determine the torque needed to achieve a desired operating speed by causing the motor to ramp up to the desired speed, measuring an electric current needed to operate the motor at the desired speed, and setting a value corresponding to a first speed tap using the measured electric current. The controller device is configured to operate the motor in a substantially constant torque mode using the set value at least after the completion of the calibration operation. The motor may be configured for use in a ventilation system, such as an HVACR system.

  • US Patent:
    20030042860, Mar 6, 2003
  • Filed:
    Sep 4, 2002
  • Appl. No.:
    10/234264
  • Inventors:
Louis Sulfstede - Irving TX, US
  • International Classification:
    H02P007/00
  • US Classification:
    318/432000
  • Abstract:
A system and method of controlling airflow within an air delivery system. The method begins by identifying and measuring a particular air conditioning system's blower characteristics. A mathematical relationship for finding a particular CFM based on torque and speed is developed utilizing several discrete airflows within regions or bins within a designated range. The mathematical model is employed by a controller of the air conditioning system for controlling CFM. Additionally, the method may optionally change from an airflow control mode to a blower speed or torque control mode when restrictions are placed upon the air conditioning system.

  • US Patent:
    48562866, Aug 15, 1989
  • Filed:
    Sep 1, 1988
  • Appl. No.:
    7/240418
  • Inventors:
Louis E. Sulfstede - Tyler TX
Robert W. Helt - Tyler TX
Thomas E. Jensen - Tyler TX
  • Assignee:
American Standard Inc. - New York NY
  • International Classification:
    F25B 100
  • US Classification:
    62 89
  • Abstract:
A variable capacity refrigeration system includes a control scheme having three interrelated closed loops. The system includes a refrigeration system controller and at least one variable speed, electronically commutated DC motor driving a compressor. In the first closed loop, the controller supplies a speed command signal to a motor drive which governs the speed of the motor driven compressor. The speed of the compressor varies the system's capacity to condition the temperature of a comfort zone. A temperature sensor in the zone provides a temperature feedback signal to the controller to complete the first closed loop. In the second closed loop, the speed command signal from the controller is varied in response to a speed feedback signal received from a compressor drive which includes both the motor and the motor drive. The third closed loop is between the motor drive and the motor. The motor drive electronically commutates the motor as it delivers an electrical supply to the motor in response to a position feedback signal generated from within the motor.
