    The present disclosure provides for a power system for a locomotive. The power system includes an engine, a first alternator, a second alternator and an inverter module. The first alternator operatively coupled to the engine and configured to provide electrical power to one or more traction motors. The second alternator operatively coupled to the engine and configured to provide electrical power to one or more auxiliary loads. The inverter module configured to selectively couple to an energy storage device to provide electrical power to the first alternator for cranking the engine and to a DC link to provide electrical power to the auxiliary load during regenerative braking of the traction motor.

The self-excitation system may include a traction alternator, a permanent magnet machine, and a chopper circuit. The traction alternator may include an alternator stator and an alternator rotor mechanically coupled to a drive shaft of the primary mover. The permanent magnet machine may include a machine stator and a machine rotor mechanically coupled to the drive shaft. The chopper circuit may be configured to receive electrical signals from the machine stator and control a field excitation of the traction alternator.

    The disclosure an integrated traction system for a locomotive. The system includes a primary electrical energy source, a traction load circuit, an auxiliary load circuit, a common DC link, s secondary electrical energy, and a controller. The electrical energy generated by the primary electrical energy source is shared between the traction load circuit and the auxiliary load circuit during a power mode through the common DC link. Further, the electrical energy form the secondary electrical energy source is supplied to the primary electrically energy source during cranking mode. The controller controls the switching of the integrated traction system between the two modes.

    A head end power (HEP) system for a locomotive is disclosed. The HEP system may include a first HEP inverter module operatively connected between a direct current (DC) link and a transformer, and a second HEP inverter module operatively connected between the DC link and the transformer in parallel with the first HEP inverter module. The first HEP inverter module and the second HEP inverter module may be configured to convert power from the DC link into an alternating current (AC). The transformer may be configured to transfer power from the first HEP inverter module and the second HEP inverter module to a HEP bus.
