Abstract:
Methods and packaging for point-of-sale (“POS”) activation and subsequent registration of products. Prior to POS activation, the product is unactivated and cannot be used. Machine-readable activation at POS is disclosed such as a data-encoded activation strip, readable by a magnetic or optical scanner, or such as integrated circuit card (“ICC”) technology. Prior to POS activation, and preferably obscured from view, the package has a personalized identification number (“PIN”), such as alphanumeric characters with a scratch-off coating or peel-off label, or the PIN may be only readable by a magnetic or optical scanner, or may be encoded onto computer media, or may be data encoded within an ICC element. After activation, the product is registered with a registration database, whereby the PIN, and perhaps other information, is provided by the user over a communications channel, enabling the product to be utilized.
Method & Apparatus For Point Of Sale Generated Access To Remote File
This invention provides an apparatus for point of sale generated access to remote files. The method relates to a transaction between a merchant, content provider transaction manager and a customer. A point of sale generated activated identification number allows the customer to remotely download a specific file from a content provider. A package adapted for holding a data encoded card and a disk or cartridge is disclosed. The card generally defines a plane and includes a means to encode data. In the preferred embodiment the package has first and second panels, retaining means for securing the card substantially between the first and second panels, wherein a data encoded stripe is not exposed and means for exposing the data encoded strip, while the card is secured between the panels.
Point Of Sale Activation For Software And Metered Accounts
A packaged delivery system and method are provided for point-of-sale activation for delivery of products or services. The packaged delivery system includes a package, at least one component related to the products or services and retained within the package when closed, and a card secured to the package. The card has an exposed data-encoded portion, accessible at a point of sale, that allows the activation process to begin through a point-of-sale activation device. The card further includes a personal identification number (PIN) associated with the control number and the products or services. The corresponding method includes the steps of: using a point-of-sale activation device to transmit a number associated with the goods or services; then activating a PIN by a processing apparatus; and then activating delivery of the goods or services by the processing apparatus.
