Abstract:

The present invention relates to a support structure, system and materials for supporting a reflector. A rim stiffening beam is securely attached to the circumference of the reflector. A plurality of support struts is attached to the rim stiffening beam, joining to one or more nodes, thereby providing support for the reflector and substantial open volume directly behind the reflector for instrumentation, drive and control units, or other purposes. A central support structure supports the nodes and further supports a plate attached to the back of said reflector. This plate is advantageously relatively stiff in its radial dimension but relatively flexible in its axial dimension.

Abstract:

An anti-backlash system comprising a single drive pinion and motor is disclosed. In an exemplary embodiment, the single drive pinion is situated between two idler gears and is allowed to move in the radial direction relative to the bull gear. A preload force provides for the substantial absence of backlash at low torque loads. The pinion moves to the center point between the two idler gears and balances the torque during high torque loads. The present anti-backlash system is well suited for use in drive and positioning systems that are subject to variable and reversing loads, such as those experienced by radio telescopes in variable wind conditions.

Abstract:

A cochlear electrode comprising a spirally curved distal tip portion carrying electrical conductors for stimulating the cochlea, a lead offset from the distal tip portion and a bridge therebetween and extending from the distal tip adjacent the proximal terminus thereof. The bridge defines a slide for guiding the distal tip portion into and out of an insertion tool during implantation of the electrode while the proximal terminus defines a push point for a push rod included in the insertion tool for sliding the distal tip out of the tool and into the cochlea.

Abstract:

A method of failure detection in a storage system is performed by the storage system. The method includes detecting a failure in a nonvolatile random access memory device that is in or coupled to a storage device having storage memory. The storage system has multiple NVRAM devices and multiple storage devices that have storage memory. The method includes taking a portion or all of the NVRAM device offline. Taking a portion or all of the NVRAM device offline is responsive to detecting the failure. Taking a portion or all of the NVRAM device off-line is while keeping online the storage memory of the storage device, sufficient ones of the NVRAM devices, and sufficient ones of the storage devices to provide reliable access to data and metadata in the storage system.

Abstract:

A method of operating a storage system is provided. The method includes detecting differing amounts of storage memory on two or more of a plurality of blades of the storage system and forming a plurality of resiliency groups of blades, based on the differing amounts of storage memory, each resiliency group comprising a subset of the plurality of blades of the storage system supporting data recovery in case of failure of two of the blades of the resiliency group.
