Described herein is a method of constructing a landing pad using a rocket engine while in-flight. Among other benefits, this method can reduce ejecta that otherwise would occur during landing on an unimproved surface. While a spacecraft is hovering over an unimproved surface, the spacecraft can inject particles into its rocket engine, after which the particles absorb heat from the engine and are projected at ballistic speeds toward the unimproved surface to create a landing pad. After constructing the landing pad and waiting for the landing pad to cool, the spacecraft can land on the landing pad. Also described herein are landing pads created from such particles as they impact the surface in a disc splat mode into the unimproved surface.

A sunset prediction system performs the steps of determining a location of interest, and collecting weather forecast data at or around the time of either sunrise or sunset, at the location and a surrounding area adjacent the location. The collected weather forecast data includes cloud density and cloud altitude. The sun prediction system then determines from the collected weather forecast data whether there will be clouds at the location that are advantageous for photography at or around the time of sunrise or sunset, and whether the sunlight will be obstructed by obstructing clouds in the surrounding area. A forecast rating is then reported so that the user can determine whether to plan photography at the location.

A fluid system includes a fluid valve, a fluid filter connected to the fluid valve, a first pressure sensor in fluid communication the fluid filter, a second pressure sensor disposed downstream of the fluid filter, and a controller configured to determine a condition of the fluid filter according to information from the first pressure sensor and the second pressure sensor. The controller may be configured to control operation of the fluid valve according to the condition of the fluid filter and the information from the first pressure sensor and the second pressure sensor. Methods for controlling a fluid system are also disclosed.
Device Including An Anti-Rotation Mechanism For A Piston And A Method Of Using The Same
A device includes an outer cylinder having a cylinder inner wall and a cylinder outer wall and at least one magnet disposed on or between the cylinder inner wall and the cylinder outer wall and a piston having a piston inner wall and a piston outer wall and at least one magnet disposed on or between the piston outer wall and the piston inner wall. In one embodiment, the piston is rotatable within the cylinder and slidably movable along an axis respective to the cylinder. The piston is also disposed within the cylinder such that the at least one magnet disposed on or between the cylinder inner wall and the cylinder outer wall is aligned with the at least one magnet disposed on or between the piston outer wall and the piston inner wall, substantially preventing the piston from rotating relative to the cylinder.
