Abstract:

An efficient arylation technique for use in the synthesis of erythromycin derivatives, involving a modified Heck reaction which employs less than six mole percent of palladium catalyst and no phosphine is disclosed. With this modified Heck reaction, an O-alkenylaryl macrolide can be obtained in a much shorter reaction time than under conventional Heck reaction conditions. The modified Heck reaction can be utilized in a method for phosphine-free arylation of an O-allylic erythromycin derivative, in a method for preparing an O-alkenylaryl erythromycin A derivative, or in a method for preparing a 2′, 4″-hydroxyl protected 6-O-alkenylaryl erythromycin A derivative.

Abstract:

An integrated device is for sampling and testing an analyte. The device generally includes a housing, a lancing device for sampling an analyte, a test strip for substantially capturing at least a portion of the analyte, and a display unit for displaying a result corresponding to the captured portion of the analyte. A method includes performing a single operation to sample an analyte, to capture the sampled analyte, to perform testing on the sampled analyte, and to display a result corresponding to the performed test. A method includes using an integrated sampling and testing device placing the device the device on a test site of a subject, such as a patient, and performing the single operation to obtain a test result. The sampling and testing of analytes may involve testing analytes in blood, such as the blood of a diabetic patient.

Abstract:

In an embodiment, a hinge for a fluid-filled lens assembly includes a base having a first end configured to connect to a temple arm of the lens assembly and a second end configured to connect to a frame of the lens assembly, wherein the base includes a gap that is shaped to allow for tubing to pass from the first end to the second end of the base. In an embodiment, the first end of the base includes a cammed surface configured to engage a surface of the temple arm.
