Abstract:
The present invention includes methods and apparatus for driving a cholesteric display system using a dynamic drive scheme. The dynamic drive scheme is used to drive the electrodes of the cholesteric display in order to provide desired pixel states. Pixel states are controlled by the voltage applied across the pixel. The present invention uses pulse width modulation (PWM) during the dynamic drive scheme in order to control the voltage applied across the pixels. PWM modulation may be used during any phase (e. g. , preparation phase, selection phase, evolution phase, and/or final phase) of the dynamic drive waveform depending on the needs of the cholesteric display system.

Abstract:
A liquid crystal display (LCD) system, comprising a matrix of pixels, analyzes a video data stream for grayscale level jumps from extreme black to moderate gray levels. Transitions in grayscale levels are restricted between adjacent pixels so as to reduce image degradation due to fringe field effects. A memory, such as a shift register, may be used to store and then grayscale levels to be written to adjacent pixels are compared and if a difference between these grayscale levels exceed a certain value then at least one of the grayscale levels is modified.

Abstract:
A LCD test system is provided for use in a high volume production environment. An automated test is performed that tests each LCD and provides a pass/fail indication. The automated test includes an image-sticking test that drives the test image based on a control voltage that corresponds to a maximum rate of change of brightness. The control voltage is determined by differentiating an electro-optic curve. The brightness difference between the test image and another test image is compared to predetermined threshold. The other test image may be a gray scale test. Alternatively, the image-sticking test may integrate brightness levels of odd and even frames, compare these results to predetermined thresholds. The test includes a color uniformity test in which average differences in peak reflectance and peak frequency within sections of the LCD are compared to predetermined thresholds for the pass/fall indication. The test includes a spatial distribution of defects test.

Abstract:
The present disclosure relates to electronic displays and display components, specifically to a method of addressing more pixels with a smaller number of driver outputs while also allowing very narrow frames on three sides of a display. It further discloses a display driver integrated circuit capable of providing the signals required for the disclosed addressing method and display systems capable of being addressed by the disclosed method and display driver integrated circuit.
Liquid Crystal Displays With Polarized Infrared Illumination
Systems and methods for IR readable transmissive and reflective displays are disclosed that do not suffer from a mirror-like appearance or undesirable dimming of the display due to sequential stacks of polarizers. The disclosed systems and methods use available IR LEDs in addition to, or in place of, visible light LEDs. An illuminator or integrator, which is a lightguide, is designed to maintain the polarization state of the light. The display can use a regular visible light, front polarizer and hence does not suffer from brightness reduction caused by an IR capable polarizer.
