Abstract:

A television receiver which is coupled to a digital VCR to receive an ATSC-encoded multi-program stream containing video, audio and data programs. The receiver recognizes one of the data programs as containing computer software for the digital television receiver, extracts the data program from the multi-program stream into a memory area which is separate from the memory areas used to decode the audio and video programs and then uses data in the extracted data program to update information which controls the operation of the television receiver. The television receiver includes a microprocessor which is coupled to a video processor via an IC bus. The video processor includes registers which are coupled to the IC bus. The microprocessor updates these values from the information in the extracted data program. The extracted data program may include a program image for the operational software for the microprocessor and may replace the operational software to update the operation of the television receiver.

Abstract:

A method of generating an adjustable video display window from an on screen display (OSD) bitmap is provided. The adjustable video display window masks undesirable video artifacts from a video display. The method includes generating an image pattern, the image pattern being produced by a video display processor of the video display. Parameters of the video display processor are adjusted to vary the dimension of the generated image pattern to redefine the periphery of an active region of the video display so that users of the video display are not able to view undesirable artifacts.

Abstract:

A method of synchronizing audio frame presentation time with a system time in an MPEG audio bit-stream decoder is provided. The method includes identifying a time disparity between an audio frame presentation time and a system time. A group of successive audio frames in the MPEG audio bit stream are then examined for an audio frame having an amplitude value less than a threshold value. An audio frame is selected from the examined bit stream for skipping or repeating. If an audio frame below the threshold value is identified, it is selected, otherwise the last frame in the group of frames is selected. The selected frame is then skipped or repeated to synchronize the audio presentation time to the system time in order to minimize the effect of audio artifacts on the listener.

Abstract:

An electronic device automatically adjusts an output signal emanating from an output of the device. The device includes a telephony interface for receiving a telephony transmission. The device detects a ring signal from the telephony transmission, and automatically adjusts the output signal of the device. The adjusted output signal can be used to notify an operator of a detected ring signal or to attenuate the output signal of the device to allow for ease of hearing the telephone transmission. In one embodiment, the device can automatically restore the output signal following completion of the telephone transmission or an action by a user of the electronic device.

A system and associated method of converting audio data from a television signal into textual data for display as a closed caption on an display device is provided. The audio data is decoded and audio speech signals are filtered from the audio data. The audio speech signals are parsed into phonemes in accordance by a speech recognition module. The parsed phonemes are grouped into words and sentences responsive to a database of words corresponding to the grouped phonemes. The words are converted into text data which is formatted for presentation on the display device as closed captioned textual data.

A method for rapidly accessing program guide information is described. The method includes displaying program guide information on a grid showing a channel axis and a time axis, with each program positioned at a location in the grid representing a channel of transmission and a corresponding time of transmission. The method includes the steps of: (a) displaying the program guide information; (b) placing a time selection field on the display; (c) highlighting and activating the time selection field; (d) determining a time index in response to the activating step; (e) calculating a new time of transmission for display based on the time index; and (f) displaying the program guide information at the new time of transmission. The time selection field includes a page field, a day field and a date field. The page field is adapted to provide a six-hour time index, the day field is adapted to provide a 24-hour time index, and the date field is adapted to provide a seven-day time index.
