Abstract:

There is provided a method for preparing organic-swelled layered silicate by direct crystallization from an alkaline reaction mixture containing a source of silicon oxide and organic onium compound, e. g. , a cetyltrimethylammonium salt. Layered silicates containing interlayer polymeric chalcogenide are prepared by contacting the organic-swelled layered silicate with a source of polymeric chalcogenide, e. g. , tetraethylorthosilicate.

Abstract:

A hydrocracking catalyst with improved distillate selectivity comprises, in addition to a metal component, a mesoporous crystalline material together with a molecular sieve component of relatively smaller pore size. The metal component of the catalyst is preferably associated with the high-surface area mesoporous component and high-metal loadings can be achieved in order to give good hydrogenation activity to the catalyst. The relatively smaller pore size component is preferably a large pore size zeolite such as zeolite Y or an intermediate pore size zeolite such as ZSM-5; this component provides a higher level of acidic functionality than the mesoporous component, achieving a functional separation in the hydrocracking process, permitting the metals loading and acidic activities to be optimized for good catalyst selectivity and activity. The catalysts enable the distillate selectivities comparable to amorphous catalyst to be achieved with improved conversion activity.

Abstract:

Layered chalcogenide materials of high thermal stability and surface area which contain interspathic polymeric chalcogenides such as polymeric silica are prepared by ion exchanging a layered metal oxide, such as layered titanium oxide, with organic cation, to spread the layers apart. A compound such as tetraethylorthosilicate, capable of forming a polymeric oxide, is thereafter introduced between the layers. The resulting product is treated to form polymeric oxide, e. g. by hydrolysis, to produce the layered oxide material. The resulting product may be employed as catalyst material in the conversion of organic compounds.

Abstract:

Ethylbenzene is produced by the alkylation of benzene with ethylene in the presence of an alkylation catalyst having a particular structure defined by its X-ray diffraction pattern. A preferred catalyst is the zeolite MCM-22. The process is typically carried out at a temperature of 300. degree. to 1000. degree. F. but the catalyst provides sufficient activity for the reaction to be carried out at temperatures below 700. degree. F. Liquid phase operation is preferred, giving a lower yield of polyethylated products. The use of the selected catalyst also results in a reduction of the xylene impurity level to values below 500 ppm in the product.

There is provided a catalyst comprising a zeolite component and a microcrystalline, microporous aluminum phosphate component. Examples of the zeolite component are ZSM-5 and zeolite Beta, and an example of an aluminum phosphate component is AlPO. sub. 4 -5. The aluminum phosphate component provides increased catalyst activity and lifetime. Also provided for in this disclosure are a method for making the zeolite/aluminum phosphate composite and a process for using this composite in the preparation or conversion of hydrocarbons, e. g. , in a dewaxing process.

Abstract:

It has been discovered that low viscosity lubricant can be prepared in high yield by catalytically cracking higher molecular weight oligomers of C. sub. 6 -C. sub. 20 alpha-olefins prepared by oligomerization in contact with reduced chromium oxide catalyst on solid support. Further, it has been discovered that the reduced viscosity oligomers produced by cracking of high vicosity lubricant retains the superior characteristics of higher viscosity index and low pour point of the liquid lubricant starting material. The lubricants are cracked in contact with hydrogen and hydrocracking catalyst such as platinum or palladium on mildly acidic support. The support can be Al. sub. 2 O. sub. 3, acidified Al. sub. 2 O. sub. 3, SiO. sub. 2, SiO. sub. 2 /Al. sub. 2 O. sub. 3, zeolites comprising high silica ZSM-5, Beta, HY, USY, and clay. The reduced viscosity material is hydrotreated during cracking.
