Abstract:

A substantially rigid card having a first side and an opposing second side, a first connector end adapted to mate with a first expansion connector on a circuit board and a second connector end adapted to mate with a second expansion connector on the board. A first peripheral card connector is connected to the first side and electrically connected to the first connector end, wherein the first connector is of a first form factor and adapted to mate with a first peripheral card. A second peripheral card connector is connected to the second side and electrically connected to the second connector end, wherein the second connector is of a second form factor different from the first form factor and matable with a second peripheral card. The first peripheral card connector is spaced from the first connector end a distance approximately the same as the distance the second peripheral card connector is spaced from the second connector end such that the peripheral card carried by the riser card shares approximately the same region whether the riser card is in a first or a second orientation.

Abstract:

An apparatus and method are disclosed for variable authentication requirements. The apparatus includes an operating status module identifying a change in an operating status of a device and maintaining a history of operating statuses, and an access control module comparing a current operating status with a previous operating status. The apparatus also includes a profile module maintaining a trust indicator for each operating status. The access control module determines a level of authentication required to unlock the device in response to the trust indicator associated with the current operating status. A device and method include detecting signal strength received at a mobile cellular communication device. A dropped call is detected between the device and another device as a function of detected signal strength. The dropped call is reconnected when detected signal strength reaches a selected first threshold.

Abstract:

A method and system in a computer having a primary video controller for dynamically selecting an alternative video controller present within the computer. Initially, a diagnostic is performed to determine if alternative video controllers are connected to the computer system. A user is thereafter prompted to select an alternative video controller, if at least one alternative video controller is detected. The primary video controller is then temporarily disabled, in response to a selection of an alternative video controller. The alternative video controller is then automatically designated as the primary video controller, in response to the disabling of the primary video controller, such that the alternative video controller may be temporarily utilized as a primary video controller without altering internal computer system hardware settings or power cycling the computer system. The primary video controller may be implemented initially as an on-board video controller, while the alternative video controllers may be connected to the computer via adapter peripheral cards and slots.
