Abstract:
A surgical instrument having a rotational ring is described. In one implementation, the surgical instrument includes a handle and a rotational ring. The handle includes at least one actuator member configured to operate a surgical tool located at a tip of the surgical instrument by moving the actuator member. The rotational ring is positioned in substantially close proximity to the one or more actuator members. Rotation of the rotational ring causes the surgical tool located at the tip of the surgical instrument to rotate in a corresponding rotational fashion.

Abstract:
A laser probe including a handpiece and a rigid cannula fixed to the handpiece to prevent relative translational movement-therebetween. An optical fiber for delivering laser energy is supported for translational movement relative to the handpiece. A slidable button is fixed to the optical fiber via a rigid sleeve such that the button and optical fiber move together in the same direction during operation. The fiber may be selectively positioned relative to the button to cause the button to act as a visual indicator of the direction in which the fiber will extend from the cannula. The button may be specially configured with an enlarged head portion to enhance grippability and smooth operation of the button.

Abstract:
An adapter for connecting a light source to a connector of an optic fiber instrument is described. The adapter includes a sleeve having an external surface configured to fit inside a portion of the connector. The external surface of the sleeve includes a groove that is positioned to engage a tube located inside the connector. Accordingly, when the sleeve is inserted inside the connector, the tube catches the groove thereby coupling the adapter to the connector.

Abstract:
The present invention relates to a method for generating hypotheses automatically from graphical models built directly from data. The method of the present invention links three key scientific concepts to enable hypothesis generation from data driven hypothesis-models: including the use of information theory based measures to identify informative feature subsets within the data; the automatic generation of graphical models from the informative data subsets identified from step one; and the application of optimization methods to graphical models to enable hypothesis generation. The integration of these three concepts can enable scalable approaches to hypothesis generation from large, complex data environments. The use of graphical models as the model representation can allow prior knowledge to be effectively integrated into the modeling environment.

US Classification:

Abstract:
In accord with one aspect of the invention, an apparatus for illuminating and magnifying an object in a sterile field for observation is provided. A holder is mounted at one end of a base assembly. A magnifying lens is mounted to the holder and defines a field of vision. A light is attached to the holder by an attaching means in a predetermined spatial relationship with the lens such that the light directs a beam of light into the field. A method is provided for illuminating and magnifying an object in a sterile field without contaminating the sterile field. The base assembly and the holder are sterilized. The base assembly is positioned in the sterile field. A sterile pack containing the light in a sterilized condition is opened and the light is moved into the sterile field. The light is inserted into the opening of the holder. The light is actuated and provides a light beam.
