Abstract:

Holographic storage mediums, methods for producing the storage medium, methods for storing data in the holographic storage medium, and optical storage reading methods are described herein. The holographic storage medium can be formed from a composition comprising a thermally crosslinked polysiloxane binder; a photoactive material; and a photo-initiator, wherein the photoactive material has a concentration that remains about the same before and after a thermal cure process to form the thermally crosslinked polysiloxane binder.

Disclosed herein is a method of manufacturing a data storage media comprising mixing a photochromic dye with an organic material or an inorganic material to form a holographic composition; and molding the holographic composition into holographic data storage media. Disclosed herein too is an article comprising a photochromic dye and an organic material, wherein the article is used as a data storage media. Disclosed herein too is a method for recording information comprising irradiating an article that comprises a photochromic dye; wherein the irradiation is conducted with electromagnetic energy having a wavelength of about 350 to about 1,100 nanometers; and reacting the photochromic dye.

A composition comprising components A, B and optionally C, wherein component A comprises at least one carboxy-terminated polyarylate or an otherwise functionalized polyarylate. Component B is an organic species which can react with the reactive endgroups of component A, and component C is a catalyst or mixture of catalysts. The carboxy-terminated and functionalized polyarylates may be prepared by a solution polymerization method wherein a stoichiometric excess of a diacid chloride is reacted with a dihydroxy-substituted aromatic compound (e.g. resorcinol) in the presence of an organic base to provide an intermediate chlorocarbonyl group-substituted polyarylate which chlorocarbonyl groups may be elaborated to a variety of reactive endgroups including carboxy groups and epoxy groups.

Disclosed are a holographic storage medium, a method for producing a holographic storage medium, a method for storing data on a holographic storage medium, and an optical reading method. The holographic storage medium comprises an dimensionally stable film that is formed by partially curing a mixture, wherein said mixture comprises (a) a binder material; (b) a curable photoactive material; (c) an optional sensitizer; and (d) a photoinitiator, and wherein at least a portion of the photoactive material remains unreacted after the forming. Articles comprising holographic storage media in various forms are also disclosed.
