A system and method employing an access terminal for maintaining discontinuous communications including a gateway receiver for receiving the discontinuous information, a radio frequency (RF) communication link via geosynchronous earth orbit satellite for conveying multiple communication channels using time division multiple access (TDMA), the access terminal initiating information communication with the receiver via at least one of the multiple communication channels. The access terminal further includes a memory for storing protocol processing information and a transmitter for establishing the radio frequency communication link to the receiver of the terrestrial gateway system. The access terminal memory provides for destroying of a signal pattern or protocol assigned to the access terminal by the gateway receiver or transmission of keep-alive bursts by the transmitter during periods of inactivity to maintain information communication with the receiver.

Abstract:
A system ( ) and method ( ) for estimating the location of a terrestrial-based user terminal ( ) is provided. The user terminal ( ) is capable of measuring the relative signal strengths of a plurality of spot beams pilot signal emitted from a geostationary satellite ( ). The user terminal ( ) then estimates its position based on the measured relative signal strengths. Using this approach, the user terminal ( ) can quickly determine its location without prior knowledge of its position or delay time.
Synchronization Apparatus And Method For A Return Link Power Control For Satellite Systems
An approach for providing message synchronization in a communication system is disclosed. Using a selected channel coding method (e. g. , Golay coding), an encoder encodes a message for transmission over a communication channel. An interleaver applies a predetermined interleaving pattern to the encoded message. A mask pattern with a prescribed sequence of bits is applied to the interleaved message; the prescribed sequence is ordered to eliminate an all zeros bit pattern and an all ones bit pattern. A multiplexer multiplexes the masked message with data traffic over the communication channel. The masked message is segmented into multiple blocks of a fixed length. At the receiver side, the mask pattern is applied to the demultiplexed message. The message is de-interleaved and decoded to restore the original message. Such an approach synchronizes the message blocks without adding overhead bits for synchronization and has particular applicability to the synchronization of power control messages in a satellite communication system.

Abstract:
A mobile telephone system multiplexes plural voice traffic channels on a single carrier using a TDMA protocol. The capacity of the mobile telephone system is increased by assigning voice traffic capacity, not on a conversation basis, but on a speech spurt basis. In order to avoid compromising the voice transmission capacity, control signals (for the allocation and deallocation of both forward and reverse traffic channels) are sent using multiple diversity, i. e. both time and frequency. In addition, to increase the number of available control channels, a control channel comprises a sub-divided portion of an otherwise equivalent voice traffic slot. For reverse allocation requests, which are transmitted over a contention access channel, power diversity is used in addition to time and frequency diversity.

Abstract:
A system for controlling/conserving signal transmission power in a communications system is disclosed. The system generally includes a first unit having a transmitter and a receiver, a second unit having a transmitter and a receiver, a forward communications channel between the first unit transmitter and the second unit receiver, and a reverse communications channel between the second unit transmitter and the first unit receiver. In operation, the system determines the received signal power needs of the second unit receiver. It then generates a reverse channel explicit-power-request command based on the determination of the received signal power needs of the second unit receiver. The reverse channel explicit-power-request command represents an absolute power level at which the first unit transmitter should transmit signals over the forward communications channel. In general, this reverse channel explicit-power-request command communicates the absolute power level in a manner that is independent of the power level at which the first unit transmitter had previously been transmitting with. The system also generates a forward channel explicit-power-notification message based on a determination of the transmitted signal power from the first unit transmitter.

Abstract:
A multisubscriber unit is disclosed for use of in a digital cellular communication system to communicate with a base transceiver station and eventually to switched telephone network. The multisubscriber unit connects to a plurality of individual subscriber telephones. It includes a plurality of upconverters, modulators, downconverters, demodulators speech compressors, speech decompressors, and voice activity detectors that are assigned to a subscriber telephone upon detection of an off hook signal from the telephone. Preferably, upon the detection of data to be transmitted, to channel allocation is requested from a pool of time division multiple access channels in a digital speech interpolation pool.

Abstract:
A mobile telephone system multiplexes plural voice traffic channels on a single carrier using a TDMA protocol. The capacity of the mobile telephone system is increased by assigning voice traffic capacity, not on a conversation basis, but on a speech spurt basis. Accordingly, delays of undetermined duration may occur between subsequent information bursts which correspond to the transmission of speech spurts. An adjustment request regarding the power with which the information bursts are transmitted from a transmitting station to a receiving station is generated by detecting an information burst transmission at the receiving station, measuring the time which elapses following the transmission, and comparing the elapsed time with a predetermined threshold value. If the elapsed time exceeds the threshold, a further transmission is requested from the transmitting station notwithstanding the availability of any information to transmit. The power of the transmission received in response to the request is measured and a control message for requesting an adjustment to the transmission power level in response to the measurement is transmitted to the transmitting station.
