Abstract:
Techniques are disclosed for determining the bearing from a three-axis geophone to a seismic source, such as a person or other man-made seismic source. In one embodiment, the techniques are implemented as a method that includes receiving outputs from a three-axis geophone (x axis, y axis and z axis outputs), computing a magnitude signal based on the x and y axis outputs, determining locations of each local peak in the magnitude signal, computing a bearing estimate for each peak, and computing a median of the bearing estimates. The resulting median bearing is an estimate of the bearing from the geophone to a target seismic source. In one such case, computing the magnitude signal based on the x and y axis outputs is performed in response to detecting the target seismic source in the phase-shifted z axis output.

Abstract:
A system is provided for detecting the passage of vehicles and the classification thereof by weight using geophone outputs and a unique density measurement in which the number of peaks of the geophone signal above a predetermined threshold over a number of time frames indicates the presence of a vehicle, with the number of time frames in which the density exceeds the threshold indicating whether the vehicle is a heavy vehicle such as a tank, or a light vehicle such as a car, with the threshold eliminating both manmade and natural noise, as well as distinguishing seismic vibrations due to personnel and animals. In one embodiment, various thresholds are utilized to detect the onset of vehicle presence and the end of the event.

Abstract:
A system is provided for determining the type of vehicle which has never been sensed before that is transiting between a cluster of acoustic and seismic sensors by graphing an acoustic source level against a seismic source level for the vehicle, with light vehicles such as pick-up trucks being distinguished from heavy tracked vehicles such as tanks by where on the graph the plotted point for a vehicle lies.

Abstract:
A system and method for imaging a sample having a complex structure (such as an integrated circuit) implements two modes of operation utilizing a common electron beam generator that produces an electron beam within a chamber. In the first mode, the electron beam interacts directly with the sample, and backscattered electrons, secondary electrons, and backward propagating fluorescent X-rays are measured. In the second mode, the electron beam interrogates the sample via X-rays generated by the electron beam within a target that is positioned between the electron beam generator and the sample. Transmitted X-rays are measured by a detector within the vacuum chamber. The sample is placed on a movable platform to precisely position the sample with respect to the electron beam. Interferometric and/or capacitive sensors are used to measure the position of the sample and movable platform to provide high accuracy metadata for performing high resolution three-dimensional sample reconstruction.
