Abstract:

A method and apparatus for controlling the termination of one or more processes in an information handling system, such as UNIX processes running under the control of an UNIX operating system kernel, in response to a shutdown command. Processes may optionally register with a registration facility of the operating system kernel as permanent processes ineligible for process termination or as blocking processes entitled to advance notification of process termination. In response to receiving a shutdown command, a shutdown facility of the operating system kernel notifies each process that has registered as a blocking process of an impending shutdown. Upon the expiration of a predetermined time interval, the shutdown facility determines whether all of the processes that have registered as blocking processes have concurred in the shutdown, either by unregistering as blocking processes or by terminating. If all of the processes that have registered as blocking processes have concurred in the shutdown, the shutdown facility terminates processes that have not registered as permanent processes while allowing processes that have registered as permanent processes to continue to run. Otherwise, the shutdown facility aborts the shutdown without terminating any of the processes and generates a message identifying processes that have not concurred in the shutdown.

Abstract:

A method and apparatus for managing a resource in an information handling system in which one or more processes are utilizing the resource. The current utilization of the resource is determined and compared with a predetermined maximum utilization set for the resource, either for the system as a whole or for a particular process executing on the system. A message is generated if the current utilization of the resource reaches any one of a plurality of predetermined fractional thresholds relative to the predetermined maximum utilization set for the resource. An operator command allows the messages to be displayed for all resources or just for system-wide resources, or to be suppressed entirely. Another operator command allows the operator to obtain a display of current resource utilization, the peak (“high water”) utilization since the last reset, and the maximum resource utilization, either for the system as a whole or for a particular process. Yet another operator command allows the operator to change a usage limit for a particular process without affecting other processes.

Abstract:

The present invention relates generally to improvements of wear resistant cosmetic compositions. Specifically, this invention relates to a cosmetic composition containing particular copolymers with glass transition temperatures greater than 70 Celsius that demonstrate enhanced wear in combination with a smooth, non-tacky feel. Since most carrier solvents formulated into cosmetics are weak solvents with high boiling points and slow evaporation rates the applied films remain wet and tacky resulting in poor cosmetic performance. The polymers of the present invention overcomes this deficiency due to the high Tg associate with the polymer which yields an apparent faster dry time in the applied coating thus improving the cosmetic's film integrity.

Abstract:

The present invention provides a durable, external surfactant free, cationic, water based jet ink polymer which when formulated into an ink jet ink results in a printing that has an excellent adhesion to metal or plastic substrates. Such a jet ink polymer is suitable performance replacement of solvent soluble polymers currently in commercial use. The hybridized copolymer comprises a hydrophobic functional polymeric backbone comprised of a polysiloxane polymer, a polyolefin polymer, or a functional polyvinyl polymer. The hybridized copolymer also comprises a plurality of copolymeric side chains attached to the backbone, comprising a polymerizable amine-containing unsaturated monomer, and a polymerizable unsaturated monomer. The use of the inks of the present invention enhances performance criteria such as print-head open time, ink stability, and resistance to typical water based cleaners.
