Abstract:
Methods and devices for the parallel, in vitro screening of biomolecular activity using miniaturized microfabricated devices are provided. The biomolecules immobilized on the surface of the devices of the present invention include proteins, polypeptides, polynucleotides, polysaccharides, phospolipids, and related unnatural polymers of biological relevance. These devices are useful drug development, functional proteomics and clinical diagnostics and are preferably used for the parallel screening of families of related proteins.

Abstract:
In one embodiment, redundancy elimination for web caching may be provided. Upon receiving a request for a content object, a determination of whether the content object is cached may be made. In response to determining that the content object is not cached, the requested content object may be retrieved and, if the content object is associated with an aggregate popularity exceeding a caching threshold, the content object may be cached before providing the requested content object.

Abstract:
In some embodiments, a request for a content object may be received as a data packet. Upon determining that the content object is not cached, an element of the data packet may be modified and the modified data packet may be forwarded toward a content provider of the content object.
A method for treating an organic polymer material, preferably a vinylidene chloride/vinyl chloride copolymer (Saran) to produce a flat sheet of carbon film material having a high surface area (. apprxeq. 1000 m. sup. 2 /g) suitable as an electrode material for super capacitor applications. The method comprises heating a vinylidene chloride/vinyl chloride copolymer film disposed between two spaced apart graphite or ceramic plates to a first temperature of about 160. degree. C. for about 14 hours to form a stabilized vinylidene chloride/vinyl chloride polymer film, thereafter heating the stabilized film to a second temperature of about 750. degree. C. in an inert atmosphere for about one hour to form a carbon film; and finally activating the carbon film to increase the surface area by heating the carbon film in an oxidizing atmosphere to a temperature of at least 750-850. degree. C. for between 1-6 hours.
Carbon Film Electrodes For Super Capacitor Applications
A microporous carbon film for use as electrodes in energy strorage devices is disclosed, which is made by the process comprising the steps of: (1) heating a polymer film material consisting essentially of a copolymer of polyvinylidene chloride and polyvinyl chloride in an inert atmosphere to form a carbon film; and (2) activating said carbon film to form said microporous carbon film having a density between about 0. 7 g/cm. sup. 2 and 1 g/cm. sup. 2 and a gravimetric capacitance of about between 120 F/g and 315 F/g.

Abstract:
Lateral loading methods of use in high-throughput methods for screening large populations of variant proteins are provided. The methods utilize a flow cell encompassing large-scale arrays of microcapillaries, where each microcapillary comprises a solution containing a variant protein, an immobilized target molecule, and a reporter element. Immobilized target molecules may include any molecule of interest, including proteins, nucleic acids, carbohydrates, and other biomolecules.
The invention, is directed to devices and methods for low cost and convenient separation, of plasma from whole blood. In some embodiments, devices of the invention comprise an integrated collection of channels and chambers m a body that permit acquisition of a blood sample by capillary action, centrifugal separation of cells from plasma, and manual dispensing of purified plasma by simple pinching of a bellows chamber to force air into plasma-holding channels which thereby expels a predetermined volume of the purified plasma.
