Abstract:

A planetary gearset includes a sun gear member having a sun gear body made of a steel material and an outer periphery with a plurality of teeth formed thereon. Each of the sun gear teeth has at least one mating surface for engaging mating surfaces on complementary teeth on at least one planet gear. A fatigue-resistant coating is applied to the mating surfaces of the sun gear teeth. The coating is harder and more abrasive than the mating surfaces of the planet gear teeth.

Abstract:

A layered coating is disclosed herein. The layered coating includes a chromium layer, an intermediate layer of chromium and nitrogen established on the chromium layer, and an outer layer of chromium and nitrogen established on the intermediate layer. The intermediate layer has a gradually changing composition, wherein the chromium concentration decreases from an area of the intermediate layer adjacent the chromium layer towards a surface of the layered coating.

A method of operating a fuel injector includes determining an actual energizing time correction value for a fuel injector at a first fuel rail pressure, calculating an extrapolated energizing time correction value by performing a mathematical calculation on the actual energizing time correction value, and controlling the operation of the fuel injector based on the actual energizing time correction value and the extrapolated energizing time correction value.

Abstract:

Methods for determining an irregular fuel request (IFR) for vehicle engines coupled to driveshafts via clutched transmissions are provided and include: determining an idle condition of the engine, generating one or more fuel requests during the idle condition, and determining an IFR based on a clutch control parameter and a fuel request generated during the idle condition. The idle condition of the engine is determined based on a vehicle speed and an engine speed if the vehicle speed and engine speed are below respective thresholds. An IFR is determined if a fuel request falls outside a range, and/or if the clutch control parameter is such that the clutch does not substantially impart load to the engine. The idle fuel request range is determined based on a combustion mode of the engine and/or a gear state of the transmission. The method further includes implementing a control action after determining an IFR.

A process for treating a steel alloy component includes the steps of: providing a steel alloy component having a plurality of teeth with a root portion and a tip; and processing the steel alloy so that the root portion of the gear teeth are hardened without through hardening of the tips of the gear teeth.
