  • Flash Lamp Array Having A Positively Acting Flash Sensing Indicator

    view source
  • US Patent:
    41457307, Mar 20, 1979
  • Filed:
    Dec 27, 1977
  • Appl. No.:
    5/864309
  • Inventors:
Nicholas J. Rainone - Clifton NJ
  • Assignee:
Westinghouse Electric Corp. - Pittsburgh PA
  • International Classification:
    G03B 1502
  • US Classification:
    362 10
  • Abstract:
A flash lamp array including a plurality of flash lamps and sequencing electrical circuitry for sequentially flashing the lamps. The array comprises a flash sensing indicator that is readily observable by an operator of the flash lamp array and includes a generally flat radiation sensitive means and having sections thereof aligned with the flash lamps. Each radiation-sensitive section is positioned to receive some of the radiant energy emitted by the flashing of one of the aligned lamps and is operable to constrict and change appearance upon being irradiated to provide an indicia of such flashing. The radiation-sensitive sections are each provided with a structurally weakened portion so that upon irradiation by the flashing of one of the aligned lamps, the irradiated one of the radiation-sensitive sections will readily separate at the structurally-weakened portion to readily constrict upon itself to positively provide a desired change in appearance of the irradiated section.
  • Halogen-Cycle Type Incandescent Lamp

    view source
  • US Patent:
    41456300, Mar 20, 1979
  • Filed:
    Dec 5, 1977
  • Appl. No.:
    5/857475
  • Inventors:
Aristide R. DeCaro - Edison NJ
Nicholas J. Rainone - Clifton NJ
  • Assignee:
Westinghouse Electric Corp. - Pittsburgh PA
  • International Classification:
    H01K 118
    H01K 150
  • US Classification:
    313273
  • Abstract:
The planar multi-coil filament of a high-wattage halogen-cycle incandescent lamp is suspended within the envelope by a mount assembly having support rods that are fastened to the lead-in conductors, the ends of the filament and the insulating bridge members by mechanical means rather than metal-to-metal welds. The mechanical junctures are effected by providing a coiled portion on one of the components and then crimping or hot-clamping it around the inserted part of the other component. The expense and quality control problems encountered with tungsten-to-tungsten and molybdenum-to-tungsten welds in the prior art halogen-cycle lamps are thus eliminated. Lamp cost is further reduced by fabricating the envelope from a selected hard glass and, in the case of lamps having large planar filaments, distortion of the filament coiled sections is prevented by modifying the mount structure to provide a "floating bridge" action.
  • Flash Lamp Array With Improved Switch Mounting

    view source
  • US Patent:
    42577640, Mar 24, 1981
  • Filed:
    May 18, 1978
  • Appl. No.:
    5/907217
  • Inventors:
Nicholas J. Rainone - Clifton NJ
  • Assignee:
Westinghouse Electric Corp. - Pittsburgh PA
  • International Classification:
    F21K 500
  • US Classification:
    431359
  • Abstract:
A flash lamp array is disclosed having a plurality of flash lamps connected to sequencing circuitry on a circuit board. A plurality of solid-state thermally activated switches, having predetermined composition and physical characteristics and predetermined dimensions, are located externally of the lamps and affixed directly to one side of the circuit board. The sequencing circuitry includes printed circuit branches having a plurality of spaced-arm sections two of which overlay each of the switches and terminate proximate each of the switches. The exposed surface portion of the switches upon being irradiated by a flashed lamp converts to an electrically conductive state to insure a closed electrical circuit between the overlaying spaced-arm sections of the printed circuit.
