Abstract:

A repeater employs multiple threshold detectors to distinguish between signals from external devices and signals generated within the repeater. Signals that are sent from the repeater are configured to be between two threshold levels, so that a detector at one threshold level will detect an active signal, but the detector at the other threshold level will not detect an active signal. When an external signal is received on one side (A) of the repeater, it is propagated to the other side (B) of the repeater, and at the same time, the other side (B) of the repeater is configured to only propagate external signals back to the first side (A). In this manner, the internally generated signal from one side (A) is not propagated back to the same side (A), and a latch-up is avoided. In like manner, when an external signal is received at the other side (B), the first side (A) of the repeater is configured to propagate only externally generated signals. If both sides of the repeater are externally driven, the active signal is propagated to both sides of the repeater, thereby emulating the response that would be provided by a wired bus without a repeater.

Abstract:

A current-compensating circuit provides compensation to a reference voltage such that the current through a diode-connected MOS transistor remains constant, regardless of threshold voltage. The compensating circuit includes another MOS transistor that is connected as a voltage follower in saturation. Variations in the component of the reference voltage that are produced by the effects of process variation on this other MOS transistor act to correct the current variations that these same process variations cause in the diode-connected MOS transistor.

Abstract:

A robust state machine is provided for controlling a slave interface to an I C-bus. The state machine is configured to enforce the slave-device-protocol of the I C specification, and to provide recovery from anomalous master-device behavior. In accordance with this invention, the state transitions of the state machine at the slave-device are controlled by the master-devices control of the SCL line of the I C-bus, except if a START condition is detected. The state machine is configured to asynchronously respond to a START condition on the I C-bus, regardless of its current state, to force the state machine to a known state. In the known state following the START condition, the slave-device terminates any transmissions to the I C-bus, thereby minimizing subsequent interference on the bus.
