Abstract:

A computer storage system having a processor that supports operation of at least one software application in order to store selected data in the computer storage system, at least one storage media for storing the selected data, a plurality of storage policies, each having particular storage guidelines, that are available to determine how data is to be stored in the computer storage system, and a storage control that interacts with the at least one software application of the processor to determine which of the plurality of storage policies to use for storage of the selected data and that stores the selected data according to the selected storage policy. In one embodiment, the storage control of the computer storage system migrates the selected data from one of the at least one storage media to another of the at least one storage media according to the selected storage policy.

Abstract:

A data retrieval system that includes a computer system having a processor that supports operation of at least one software application that is used for retrieving data in the computer system. A plurality of storage media are communicatively coupled to the processor with the plurality of storage media having data stored in at least one of the plurality of storage media. The software application has a retrieval module for retrieving data from the plurality of storage media, and a storage and backup map is included that indicates to the retrieval module a particular location of the data that is to be retrieved by the retrieval module.

Abstract:

A storage management system that manages the storage and retrieval of digital files. The storage management system includes a plurality of storage devices that may be located in different time zones. The system also includes a processor that is configured to maneuver the digital files among the plurality of storage devices according to commands that are received from software programs that operate on the processor. In one embodiment, the system includes a retrieval control while in another embodiment a storage control is included. Either embodiment takes into account the different problems that are introduced when the plurality of storage devices are located in different time zones.

Abstract:

A storage and data management system establishes a data transfer pipeline between an application and a storage media using a source data mover and a destination data mover. The data movers are modular software entities which compartmentalize the differences between operating systems and media types. In addition, they independently interact to perform encryption, compression, etc. , based on the content of a file as it is being communicated through the pipeline. Headers and chunking of data occurs when beneficial without the application ever having to be aware. Faster access times and storage mapping offer enhanced user interaction.

Abstract:

In accordance with embodiments of the invention, a method is provided for performing a storage operation in a pipeline storage system in which one or more data streams containing data to be stored are written into data chunks. The method includes generating an encryption key associated with a first archive file to be stored when encryption is requested for the storage operation, encrypting the archive data from the data stream using the encryption key to create an encrypted data chunk when a data stream containing the archive file is processed in the pipeline storage system, storing the encrypted data chunk on a storage medium, and storing the encryption key in a manner accessible during a restore operation of the encrypted data chunk.

Abstract:

There is disclosed in a communications system having an origination storage device and a destination storage device, a data transfer pipeline apparatus for transferring data in a sequence of N stages, where N is a positive integer grater than 1, from the origination to the destination device. The data transfer apparatus comprises dedicated memory means having a predetermined number of buffers dedicated for carrying data associated with the transfer of data from the origination storage device to the destination device; and master control means for registering and controlling processes associated with the data transfer apparatus for participation in the N stage data transfer sequence. The processes include at least a first stage process for initiating the data transfer and a last Nth stage process for completing data transfer. The first stage process is operative to allocate a buffer from the predetermined number of buffers available within the dedicated memory means for collection, processing, and sending of the data from the origination device to a next stage process. The Nth stage process is operative to receive a buffer allocated to the first stage process from the (N−1)th stage process in the data transfer sequence and to free the buffer upon processing completion and storage in the destination device to permit reallocation of the buffer.

The invention provides a system and method for storing a copy of data stored in an information store. In one embodiment, a data agent reads one or more blocks containing the data from the information store. The data agent maps the one or more blocks to provide a mapping of the blocks, and transmits the one or more blocks and mapping to a media agent for a storage device.
