Abstract:
This invention provides a tunable delay of an optical signal having a carrier with an angular frequency ωand a single side band having a signal band with a median angular frequency ω. The delay line comprises at least a first, a second and a third integrated resonators coupled sequentially to a waveguide. The first and the second resonators have angular resonant frequencies ω=ω−Δω and ω=ω+Δω respectively, where Δω is a deviation from the median frequency. The third resonator provides a phase delay difference between the phase at the optical carrier ωand the phase at the median frequency ωequal to (ω−ω)T, where Tis the time delay. The device provides an equal group delay to all frequency components in the output signal and also equal phase delay for all frequency components of an RF signal when the optical signal is downconverted at a photodetector. The device may find applications controlling the time delay to antenna elements in a phased array system.

Abstract:
This invention provides a tunable delay of an optical signal having multiple frequency components. The delay comprises at least a first and a second integrated resonators coupled sequentially to a waveguide; the resonators have angular resonant frequencies ω=ω−Δω and ω=ω+Δω respectively, ωis a median frequency of an input optical signal and Δω is a tunable deviation from the median frequency. The device is providing a nearly equal true time delay to all frequency components in the output signal.
Thermally-Floating Transmitter Wavelength Grid Of Signal Channels In A Wdm Transmission System
A method and apparatus is provided for tracking a thermally floating wavelength signal channel grid generated at an optical transmitter (Tx) in an optical transmission system or optical network where the wavelengths of the individual Tx signal channels may move in wavelength due to, for example, changes in ambient temperature at the optical transmitter but the channel spacing between Tx signal channels along the thermally floating Tx wavelength grid remains constant. An optical receiver (Rx) is provided that has a demultiplexed signal channel grid that may have a different channel spacing from that of the floating Tx wavelength grid, that is either larger, the same as, or smaller Rx grid spacing compared to the Tx grid spacing, and includes a number of demultiplexed channel signal outputs along an Rx channel grid in excess of the number of Tx signal channels on the Tx channel grid so that the optical receiver is capable of detecting the floating Tx channel grid and providing electrical output signals representative of the Tx channel signals transported over the optical network.

Abstract:
This invention provides a balanced thermal approach to the tuning of an optical time delay device in order to eliminate any long-term time response of the device performance due to thermal time constants of the device, its mount, packaging or electronic temperature control circuits. The invention provides multiple ways to improve the thermal tuning speed of the balanced thermal approach. Additionally, the invention overcomes an issue of microresonator non-uniformity by operating a large group of microresonators as a ‘super-ring’ by tuning the large group together to provide a controllable group delay with large bandwidth.

Abstract:
This invention provides an optical device comprising a large group of non-uniform resonators operating cumulatively as a ‘super-ring’ to provide a controllable group delay with large bandwidth. The super-ring tuning is performed by a single control. The device may include two super-rings, each includes a large number of resonators with a resonant frequencies centered around ωand ωrespectively. The invention provides multiple ways to improve the delay duration, bandwidth and the tuning speed, and overcomes the issue of non-uniformity of resonance frequency for devices incorporating multiple optical resonators.
An add/drop multiplexer includes first and second fiber grating connected to a four-port optical circulator having first and second input/output ports, an add port, and a drop port, wherein the first fiber grating is connected to the first input/output port and the second fiber grating is connected to the second input/output port. Add signals provided to the add port of the circulator are reflected by the first fiber grating back to the optical circulator and propagate, along with one or more input optical signals, to the second fiber grating. One or more of the input optical signals are reflected by the second fiber grating back to the optical circulator and propagate to the drop port of the circulator.

Abstract:
An optical device is provided which locks the wavelength output of a laser transmitter in an optical transmission system as well as preventing the propagation of unwanted signals generated by the laser transmitter prior to the transmitter reaching the desired operating wavelength thereby reducing crosstalk between channels within a wavelength division multiplexed communication system.
Ultra-Low Noise, Highly Stable Single-Mode Operation, High Power, Bragg Grating Based Semiconductor Laser
Waveguide Bragg gratings, optical reflectors and lasers including optical reflectors are disclosed. The optical reflectors include a waveguide, perturbations proximate to the waveguide to create a Bragg grating in the waveguide, and a DC index control structure positioned to vary the DC index along at least a portion of the Bragg grating. In laser embodiments, the waveguide may be coupled to the second end of a semiconductor gain element to form an external cavity having an optical length and a cavity phase. The gain element and optical reflector may be monolithically integrated on a substrate or separate structures.
