Ex-substance abuse counselor gets prison for DUI death
In April, Sherri Lynn Wilkins, 53, was found guilty of murder, driving under the influence and other charges after the 2012 incident in which she struck 31-year-old Phillip Moreno as he crossed a street in Torrance.
"The way she treated Phillip Moreno struck at human dignity," Deputy District Attorney John Harlan, the lead prosecutor, said after the verdict. "This case has been about human dignity. We do not tolerate someone who does not pull over when they see someone on their windshield."
The victim, 31-year-old Phillip Moreno, was struck late on Saturday while crossing a street in Torrance, California. Witnesses surrounded the car about two miles later and detained Wilkins. Mr Moreno died in hospital.
Sherri Lynn Wilkins, 51, of Torrance allegedly hit Phillip Moreno, 31, at 11:25 p.m. Saturday as Moreno was walking home from a bar. Police said Wilkins panicked and kept driving until other motorists managed to stop her and take the keys out of her car's ignition.
