Abstract:

An electrical connector is provided which includes a plug and a socket, and in which the plug is latched to the socket after the plug has been inserted into the socket to maintain the electric contacts of the plug and socket in contact with one another, and which includes an abrasive affixed to at least one of the latching surfaces to increase the pull force required to separate the plug and socket when in a latched condition.

Abstract:

A light weight heavy duty electrical connector for a truck-trailer jumper cable which is constructed of a virtually indestructible plastic material resistant to corrosive chemical attack. The connector assembly includes an inner plastic body having a plurality of axially extending channels angularly spaced around the periphery thereof for receiving the individual conductors of the jumper cable and for mounting a corresponding plurality of resilient elongated split tubular electric contacts, each having a D-shaped cross-section and which are crimped to the respective conductors of the jumper cable. A removable plastic cap fits over the inner body to protect the contacts and to prevent short circuiting between the contacts. The inner body is received in an outer tubular plastic body having an integral funnel-shaped chamfer cable guard at the rear end thereof, with the jumper cable extending through the cable guard into the outer body. A transverse radially movable plastic clamp is mounted in the outer body adjacent to the rear end thereof for engaging the cable, and a set screw is threaded into the outer body to force the clamp against the cable without damage to the cable, thereby enabling the cable to hold the inner body and cap against axial movement with respect to the outer body.

Abstract:

An electrical connector for use with a tractor-trailer includes a receptacle having a generally cylindrical outer body and a molded inner body encapsulating a plurality of conductors secured to connector pins. To provide additional current carrying capacity to accommodate an automatic braking system (ABS) one of the conductors designated as a ground conductor is larger than all of the other conductors. A conductor carrying ABS current is larger than all conductors except the ground conductor. The inner and outer bodies are fastened together by means of a bayonet connection. An additional securing device includes a projection on the inner body which is held in position by means of a bail attached to the outer body. To reduce resistance at the contacts, all contacts are soldered or crimped to their respective conductors and molded within the inner body to protect all wires and connections to the connector pins from environmentally caused corrosion or damage. The outer body includes outward extending flanges for mounting and protection from damage upon operating the bayonet connection. The receptacle provides a protective door for contact connectors when not in use and a latch on the door to engage and lock an external plug when inserted properly.
