The described subject matter includes techniques and components for minimally invasive, selective capture and release of analytes. An aptamer is selected for its binding affinity with a particular analyte(s). The aptamer is functionalized on a solid phase, for example, microbeads, polymer monolith, microfabricated solid phase, etc. The analyte is allowed to bind to the aptamer, for example, in a microchamber. Once the analyte has been bound, a temperature control sets the temperature to an appropriate temperature at which the captured analyte is released.

Abstract:

Systems and methods are provided for capturing and/or isolating target microparticles. In one aspect, a method for capturing target microparticles is disclosed. The method includes: forming a fluid including the target microparticles, non-target microparticles, and magnetic beads, the magnetic beads having a stronger affinity with the target microparticles than with the non-target microparticles; flowing the fluid through a multidirectional microchannel; and applying a magnetic field to the fluid while the fluid is flowing through at least a portion of the microchannel to effect capture of at least a portion of the target microparticles onto the magnetic beads. Such a method can further includes passing the fluid having exited from the microchannel through a separator while subjecting the fluid to a second magnetic field so as to isolate the target microparticles. In addition, devices and systems are disclosed for capturing and/or isolating target microparticles based on magnetic manipulation.

The disclosed subject matter relates to a sensor or system for monitoring a target analyte by using a polymer solution that is capable of binding to the analyte. The sensor of the disclosed subject matter includes a viscosity-based sensor or a permittivity-based sensor. Abstract:

An apparatus for encapsulating a material includes a first channel in fluid communication with a source of a material for encapsulation, at least one second channel in fluid communication with a source of a photopolymerizable compound, and at least one third channel in fluid communication with a source of an encapsulating fluid. Flow of the photopolymerizable compound into the first channel produces sheath flow in the first channel such that the material is within the polymerizable compound. Addition of the encapsulating fluid produces encapsulation precursors. Upon irradiation via a UV-radiation source, the photopolymerizable compound in the encapsulation precursor forms a polymer shell encapsulating the material for encapsulation. Materials such as nanoparticle organic hybrid materials (NOHMs) and a metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) can be thus encapsulated as carbon sequestration micro particles, as the polymer shell is permeable by gases such as carbon dioxide but selectively rejects other compounds such as water.

Abstract:

A MEMS-based calorimeter includes a reference channel, a sample channel, and a thermopile configured to measure a temperature differential between the reference channel and a sample channel. The reference channel and the sample channel each include a passive mixer such as a splitting-and-recombination micromixer. The passive mixer can be formed by a first set of channels in a first layer and a second set of channels in a second layer. Methods for fabricating the MEMS-based calorimeter and methods of using the calorimeter to measure thermodynamic properties of chemical reactions are also provided.

Abstract:

A method for selecting and isolating aptamers that target M-Ig proteins with a microdevice including at least a first selection chamber is provided. The method includes preparing a first sample of M-Ig proteins from a serum; placing the M-Ig proteins in the first selection chamber; introducing a first group of oligomers including at least an M-Ig targeting oligomer into the first selection chamber, whereby the M-Ig targeting oligomer binds to the first sample of M-Ig proteins. The method further includes removing unbound oligomers of the first sample from the first selection chamber to isolate the M-Ig targeting oligomer.
