Presenter College Board National Forum, “The Future of Education,” 2011 Diversifying Our Nation’s Leadership: Achieving College Success for Talented Students from Underrepresented Backgrounds
Description:
In this session, participants will explore why many low-income students do not have equal access to our nation’s top colleges and universities, as well as examining why, even after these students do gain admission, they continue to face challenges in transitioning to college and achieving success. After reviewing the Leadership Enterprise for a Diverse America (LEDA) national model, participants will examine data-driven perspectives on the barriers faced by low-income students, not only in pursuing higher education opportunities commensurate with their academic and leadership potential, but also the obstacles they face navigating the college experience once they gain admission. Finally participants will develop strategies that college counselors, college admission officers and university personnel may use to help equip low-income students with the tools and supports they need to succeed.
