Ex-Border Patrol agents sentenced to at least 30 years in prison for migrant ...
Prosecutors said Raul Villarreal who made television appearances as an agency spokesman and once played the role of a smuggler in a public service ad recruited his brother to his ring that smuggled in Mexicans and Brazilians. One Brazilian woman told investigators she paid $12,000 to cross.
The prosecutor spoke about Raul Villarreal (VEE-uh-ray-AL) Friday afternoon in opening statements of a trial in one of the highest-profile corruption cases involving the Border Patrol. Raul and his brother Fidel have pleaded not guilty to human smuggling, bribery and witness tampering.
Raul Villarreal was long a public face of the Border Patrol, frequently appearing on television news as an agency spokesman and acting as a dangerous human smuggler in a public service announcement intended to warn Mexicans about the dangers of entering the United States illegally.
