Abstract:

A surgical-training device for measuring roughness (non-delicate manipulation) during a simulated-surgical technique is described. The device has a housing, a platform, and a sensor module. The platform is movably coupled to the housing, and is configured for three-dimensional motion relative to the housing. The platform is further configured to move from a start position to a displaced position when a force is applied to the platform as a result of a user performing a simulated-surgical technique on the platform. A sensor module, coupled to the housing, is configured to determine when the platform moves a distance (from the start position to the displaced position) that exceeds a preset-threshold distance. If the preset-threshold distance is exceeded, sensor module indicates (by visual and/or auditory alarms within the device, and/or computerized counting and scoring reports) that the user applied excessive force, and was therefore too rough when performing the simulated-surgical technique. A method of manufacturing a surgical-training device is also provided.

Abstract:

Abstract:

A hand-held cleaning device includes an elongated handle having an operative end. The operative end includes a flattened, relatively small hook, and a flexible neck. A cover can be provided to protect the operative end of the cleaning device. To use the cleaning device, for example, to clean between the palate of the wearer of a palatal expander appliance and portions of the palatal expander appliance, the hook end is slid between the palate of the wearer and the palatal expander appliance, either by the wearer of the appliance or by another person, and any food or other debris trapped in the space between the appliance and the palate of the wearer can be swept aside, pushed forward or engaged with the hook and pulled from between the palate and the appliance.

A self-contained vacuum aspirator system is disclosed which comprises a container having a vacuum applied therein; a valve assembly secured to said container for selectively allowing the passage of fluid into said container; a curette in communication with an aperture in said valve assembly; and an air permeable collection means supported within said container by the aforementioned valve assembly in communication with an opening in said valve assembly for accumulating matter collected by said currette when the valve assembly is operating to establish communication between the aforementioned aperture and opening. The valve assembly includes a first member having the aforementioned aperture therethrough with the first member having a first surface on which is positioned first sealing means surrounding said aperture and second sealing means surrounding said first sealing means; and a second member secured to said first member with the second member having the aforementioned opening therethrough and a first surface on which is positioned third sealing means surrounding said opening and fourth sealing means surrounding said third sealing means; and a slide member having a passageway therethrough with the slide member being moveably mounted between said first surfaces of the first and second members and sealingly engaged on opposite sides thereof by the first, second, third and fourth sealing means, with the slide member being moveable between a first position which interrupts communication between said aperture and said opening and a second position in which the passageway through the slide member establishes communication between the aperture in the first member and the opening in the second member to permit flow through the valve assembly.

Abstract:

A method for producing images on radiation sensitive recording mediums. The method comprises the steps of providing radiation means 20 operable to produce radiation 30 at a predetermined location from the radiation means 20, and mounting a radiation sensitive recording medium 12 and the radiation means 20 to provide relative movement between the recording medium 12 and the radiation means 20 so that respective portions of the recording medium 12 are presented at the predetermined location from the radiation means 20. Abstract:

A dual channel photo-optical clot detection system for the automatic determination of prothrombin times and activated partial thromboplastin times and other related coagulation tests. A circular tray is utilized, and is vacuum formed to provide cuvettes having uniform wall thicknesses in two circular paths and arranged with radially aligned cuvettes. A single light source is placed between the radial spaced cuvettes and thus provides a common source for two separate detectors measuring the clot time of samples in each cuvette. The automatic dual channel operation provides a fixed time for activated partial thromboplastin time test so that fixed incubation time for the tests can be obtained. Thus, the sample to be tested is maintained at a low temperature until only two stations before measurement, and, accordingly, fixed incubation periods can be determined and exact conditions can be maintained for accurate testing.
