A fuel additive for use in the treatment of diesel fuels to reduce polluting emissions during the combustion of such fuels wherein the additive composition is formulated to contain mineral seal oil, mineral spirits, a glycol alkyl ether and at least one alkyl aromatic ethoxylated surfactant. It has been found that the fuel additive composition of the invention can be blended with such fuels to dramatically reduce emissions during the combustion of such fuels.

Abstract:

Methods and apparatus are described for reading data from either a magnetic stripe, a chip or both a magnetic stripe and a chip located on a data card using a single swiping motion. An aspect of the methods and apparatus described is that movement of a data card is detected, restrained and/or prevented during exchange of information between the reader and any integrated circuits located on the data card. One embodiment includes guiding walls that form a channel and that are connected to a receiver having an interior surface, a magnetic reading head mounted on one of the guiding walls, electrical contacts located on the interior surface of the receiver and a latch extending at least partially across the channel formed by the guiding walls.

Abstract:

A card entry gate has a slot defining several ridges extending longitudinally from the upper and lower surfaces of the slot. A data-bearing card, with an encoded strip and embossed portions, fits between the ridges of the slot when inserted lengthwise in any orientation. The ridges are positioned to avoid the encoded strip and the embossed portions, thereby preventing damage to the card and reducing jitter. The ridges further resist the malicious or accidental insertion of certain coins, odd-shaped cards, and many foreign objects.

Abstract:

A system is disclosed for processing and/or issuing cards containing machine-readable information. The system is preferably housed in a terminal which includes an insertion port to accept a card from a user. The system further includes a hopper which stores a plurality of blank cards. In one embodiment, the hopper and insertion port both lead to a card flipping device, which receives a card and may rotate and/or advance the card to either a card printing module or a card reading/writing module. The card flipping device may rotate through 180. degree. , so that both sides of the card may be printed at the printing module and/or processed in the card reading/writing module. In another embodiment, the system is adapted to receive a personal identification number (PIN) entered directly by a user, and generate corresponding "offsets" or coded inputs for storage on the card.

Abstract:

A data-bearing card is transported past a reading, writing or other communication head by at least one drive element connected to an electric motor through a preselected gear train. The mechanism moves the card at speeds corresponding to a preferred range of rates at which data borne by the card is intended to pass the communication head, and does so with a minimum of "jitter". In one particular embodiment, the gear train includes a worm screw driving a worm wheel for rotation with the drive element. In another embodiment, the electric motor is supported on a base oriented substantially parallel to the card being transported, and a shaft carrying the drive element and a first gear of the gear train is supported for rotation by at least one side plate detachably mounted to the base.
