Abstract:
A method and means for automatically inventorying items having coded tags or labels using a character-recognition device, such as a wand scanner, in combination with a system for specially marking the labels when they have been successfully read and recorded by the scanner, which system comprises the use of a photosensitive dye-forming material on the label and an ultraviolet light-producing flash device on the scanner. The flash device is actuated upon the successful completion of a recognition reading and irradiates the label with ultraviolet light which produces a visible and permanent mark on the label.
An apparatus for crushing and releasing articles such as metal cans. A fixed anvil is mounted on the frame and a ram is mounted for movement in a direction toward and away from the anvil to crush an article located therebetween. The articles are fed sequentially to the crushing zone between the anvil and ram through a vertical chute. A spring loaded wedge plate extends outwardly from the ram towards the anvil and initially contacts the article intermediate its length to bend or deform the article to thereby insure uniform crushing of the article by the ram. A coil spring is mounted on the frame and has an adjustable finger which projects downwardly into the crushing zone to guide incoming cans fed from the chute into the crushing zone, and to facilitate release of the crushed can in the crushing zone.

A prosthetic joint for replacing a metatarsal-phalangeal joint of a human toe has a head with a convex bearing surface that moves against the concave bearing surface of a base. The base is elliptical and formed by two different radii of curvature with a desired ratio. The head has a generally concave bone confronting surface with four different generally flat surface areas, one surface is horizontal and parallel to the longitudinal axis of the metatarsal bone, another extends approximately perpendicular thereto, and two others extend at angles to the longitudinal axis. The horizontal lower surface allows better distribution of vertical force and helps to resist separation of the head from the bone. The head exterior surface has four different regions formed by four different radii of curvature with desired ratios to one another. These four head surfaces allow the head and base to reproduce pivoting of a healthy toe joint.
