Abstract:

The invention relates to a curable composition and a process of preparing the curable composition. The process comprises (a) forming an oligomer from oligomerization of a mixture of a monomer A having a functional group and a monomer B at a temperature in the range of from 150Â C. to 650Â C. , a pressure in the range of from 3 MPa to 35 MPa and the pressure is high enough to maintain the reaction mixture in a fluid state and a residence time in the range of from 0. 1 second to 4 minutes; and (b) reacting a modifier having at least one reactive moiety with the oligomer through a reaction between the reactive moiety of the modifier and the functional group of the monomer A in the oligomer, and the modifier further comprises a curable group.

Abstract:

A continuous process for oligomers which do not contain, as polymerized units, carboxylic acid-containing monomers and their salts, including the steps of: (1) forming a reaction mixture, substantially free of carboxylic acid-containing monomers and their salts, containing: (i) 0. 5 to 99. 95% by weight of the reaction mixture of at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer; and (ii) 0. 05 to 25% by weight, based on the weight of the ethylenically unsaturated monomer, of at least one free-radical initiator; and (2) continuously passing the reaction mixture through a heated zone wherein the reaction mixture is maintained at a temperature of at least 150Â C. and a pressure of at least 30 bars for from 0. 1 seconds to 4 minutes to form terminally-unsaturated oligomers. In addition, processes for forming oligomers of vinyl acetate and oligomers of vinyl alcohol are disclosed.

A method of preparing a curable coating and a method of curing the curable coating are disclosed. The curable composition from which the curable coating is prepared may be applied to the surface of a substrate in neat form or in aqueous medium to produce the coating. Curing of the curable coating may be accomplished by chemical generation of free radicals, by electrochemical generation of free radicals, by electron beam, by photochemical generation of free radicals, or by other electromagnetic irradiation.

Abstract:

An improved continous single step vapor phase process for the preparation of substituted vinylbenzyl chloride from substituted ethyltoluene is disclosed. In this process a substituted ethyltoluene is reacted with a halogen gas in the vapor phase, at elevated temperatures via a continuous feed process. Furthermore, this process achieves halogenation followed by dehydrohalogenation in a single pass through the reactor. There is also obtained a very high total selectivity to vinylbenzyl chloride and its precursors via this continuous process.

A process for preparing polymers having molecular weights below 5,000 and polydispersity below 2. 5 is provided. The polymerization is conducted in supercritical carbon dioxide at temperatures of at least 200. degree. C. and pressures above 3,500 psi. The process can be continuous, semi-continuous, or batch.
